I wasn't as it happened, but you also can't create a Windows Service, or not easily anyway. I guess it's pretty good for free and a nice way to get familiar with the environment but for the majority of real work it will present a few challenges. I see me forking out for the Pro version in the near future.Quote:

This might actually be because of the No Add-ins mentioned in the Blog. I am waiting until we get the CDs at my office to give the full version a whirl.Quote:

I hope you haven't stuffed things up with the betas by trying to install the RTMs before removing them. It does specifically say to remove the betas first. If you can't remove the betas or install the RTMs, I'd suggest that you try to reinstall/repair the betas first and then try to remove them. I don't know whether that's possible now or not, as Microsoft may have removed access to the beta files, which needed to be download as installed if I remember correctly.Quote:

In that link that compares the different versions it says Express doesn't have ClickOnce but when I downloaded it, it did. Also if anyone wants to have the full install downloaded as a cd image instead of the download during the actual install then you can get it from MS here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/ex...pport/install/
Bookmarks are still in the Express edition they are on the 'Text Editor' toolbar. It is sad about the Task features though :(Quote:

No No No hehe re-read the posts... You will not have to pay anything .... as long as you download and install before Novemeber 2006... even after a year...
After 1 year, the Express Editions will not be free anymore to download... but if you already have it.. then there is no worry....
Statement:
Until November 7, 2006, we are promotionally discounting the downloadable versions of Express to free. This doesn’t mean that the product turns off after a year, but rather that as long as you download the product before November 7, 2006, you can get it for free and you can use it forever.

well i've tried removing everything, but it still won't work. And the automatic installer doesn't work either. This is really annoying.
Have you tried just downloading the entire 450mb image file?
Yes i have done that but setup.exe says i haven't uninstalled the betas and if i try Ixpvp.exe the installation starts then comes up with some errors. I can't believethese betas are so much hassle.
Try the info here to uninstall:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/ex...ort/uninstall/
I can't believe it, i've actuall done it. I installed the .net2.0 then in the downloaded cd image i went to ixpvp.exe. It tried to install but loads of errors appeared, i clicked ignore. My explorer went so i went to Ctrl+Alt+Delete New task explorer.exe the installation continued then dissapeared. I went to start and there was visual basic 2005 express i clicked it and it worked. Unbelievable.
Well you should, in various places (before you download, in the agreement, etc) you are warned that betas (by definition) are not in a state to be trusted in a way that you would with a 'release' version, and you are advised in that text to not install betas to an envionment where damage would be bad for you.Quote:

I'm glad you got it working in the end :)
I can't believe all the install problems you guys are having. I've installed these things numerous times without any issues whatsoever????
Installing any Beta program is always going to create an issue when trying to upgrade to a newer version. Only install Beta versions on systems that you can reformat or on a virtual workstation image.
Moreover, with each new beta release, and now the RTM, they have always stated clearly that any previous betas should be removed first. If you heed all the warnings and follow all the instructions then you minimise the risk.
Yes, only minimize and not eliminate. I never install any Beta versions on my production workstation. Better safe then sorry. :)
For those who have not done so, if possible it is beneficial to download the actual image as outlined in JMC's posts. If you read through the Microsoft site, the images are provided to allow people to install a copy on a machine without internet access and thus there is no registration required...when you first start the program it will say that it is licensed already. Also, if you select the Register Program from the drop down menu, you will be taken to the passport site to register but you will not be given any registration code as it is not needed in the image version, only the bootstrapper.
The obvious advantage is the easy portability for the installation on other computers (like if you buy a new one). I have downloaded all of the images without any problems.
Me too because you never know when they may come in handy. So with the img files you dont need a serial number? I didnt feel like reading all the posts. :D
i'm downloading the img file on dialup so all you people who have high-speed internet better not be complaining about how long it takes to dl (i've been dling for 18hrs now and i still got 4 more to go just for vb.img, vcs.img is next)
i plan on burning this to a cd first and running it on another system before using it on my production system from the sounds of it the full visual studio 2005 is the way to go as i'll have solutions with both vb and c# projects in them
OMG! I remember those days of Dialup years ago. It only took ~35 minutes to download each one on DSL. I feel your pain.
I know thats a horrible time to wait. For me it was about 50 minutes at 200k
I downloaded every express edition available in about 2 hours, man I love cable. :D
I'll second that (except for the price  )!!!!Quote:

wouldn't it cost you more on dialup to download that file, than to just use some broadband or something.
Got any friends with broadband and a big enough limit to spare you a GB and a half?Quote:

i do but it'll be a couple of days before i can head over there by that time i'll have both vb and c# express downloaded and installed so there's little point lolQuote:

from the looks of it the framework 2.0 that comes with express is the full 2.0 (i was thinking it would be the re-distributable package that's only 25mb or something, but it looks like all 250mb of the framework is here)
also for all you that renamed the vb.img file to use nero to burn it i've got nero 6.6.0.3 enterprise edition and i didnt have to rename the file to burn it
i should probably update nero sometime here, nero 7 is out now
Yeah, I tried it with opera.. it took a crap. Firefox.. took a crap. IE, finally worked, but it wasn't really all that worth the effort. However you can sign up for other betas and such if you are into that kinda stuff..Quote:
