I dont run AV software at all for several years as I dont need it but my kids systems will need it. I havent ever got a virus. Its mostly common sense and dont trust anyone you dont know type of thing.
Seems that the poll results are inclusive so I think a few free AVs for the kids and McAfee for me so I can scan my servers. I dont think McAfee has a Activation scheme like Norton?
um, you say you never had a virus in 10 years kasRacer? Well how do you know if you dont have the anti virus software enabled?!
Its common these days, thats why you use the software, and by the way avast! allows for unlimited servers, thats why its big $$$ and it works well :)
For the first few months i had my computer i didn't have any kind of AV at all. Then my system all went to (well you know). So i checked out AVG, cause it was free, and it did a pretty decent job. I was quite pleased with it.
Then my school offered us a free version of Mcafee Enterprise, so i've been using that for the past couple of years, and it's by far the best AV i've used. Most of my friends tend to have norton mainly because it came with their system, but i've found it to be a resource hog and a nice big piece of bloat ware (the complete oposite of Mcafee Enterprise).
Alas, I've graduated and moved on and now my Mcafee Enterprise subscription has run out, so i guess i'm going back to AVG or possibly i might check out AVAST. Since some of you seem to like it. I've also heard good things about Kaspersky AV. Has anyone else heard of it?

I got a single license for McAfee for the one of my kids system that has internet access. The other two are not connected so they should be safe from getting and spreading anything.
I wanted to get McAfee Ent. but its out of my price range until October when we go live with our business. :D
NOD32 all the way for me. Honestly, Norton/Symantec anti-virus is pathetic. We run it at school and it causes more harm that it fixes (Notice I didn't say prevents, because it doesn't do that at all!)
With the blaster virus, symantec didn't stop it, rather it let it infect the machine, get backed up by system restore and then attempted to remove it unsuccessfully. Truly great software.
That's not all, we installed the latest version, version 10 CE of it, and it killed our fileserver and our entire network. Every computer became slower than it was previously (Even 9 slows down computers toooooo much for my liking), it used all the system resources on the file server and caused frequent lockups and was an absolute pain. We spent almost a whole week cleaning the network of the scum and getting it back to a workable state, and it was not pretty.
Plus it only updates once a week, uses waaaaaay too many resources, is slow, slows down the computer, takes hours to do basic scans, doesn't prevent infection, it detects infection and mostly doesn't remove it properly either.
For all those reasons, I STRONGLY advise against it to EVERYONE! I can't stand it, it has caused so many problems on many people's computers that I've seen, many bring their computer in complaining it's unusable, I kill norton and the computer springs back into life.
So the bottom line is, if you want a decent anti-virus scanner, pick NOD32. It is very, very, very fast, uses minimal resources, prevents infection i.e. detects immediately and updates once a day minimum. You honestly can't go wrong with it.
If you have more success with it than I do, well done. This is a huge trend I see all the time, so if you don't have these problems, you're one of the very few lucky ones.
Ok it looks decent but at the bottom of the page is says "BREAKING NEWS 10/29/04" Thats a bit stale?

Never seen that before, but the sites I gave you are the official ones.
They are a reseller, if you goto products, it lists Norton and others there too. Go to the official sites for the better results, don't always rely on google ;)
Ok, Im reading up on it now. They told me that "Google is your friend". Well I guess its just an aquaintence now. :D

Yes, but we were refering to the website update date/time and not the virus definition updates. ;)

No because if you look at it, they are a reseller for other antivirus products also. That and the company that sells it is called Eset, all that leads me to believe it is not the correct site, rather a reseller.Quote:

I used norton for a long time until 2006, then the speed of my pc decreased alot, this is the same with mcafee as i like to have full protection so i install all the services. Now i use Avast 4 Home Edition until now i like this one as it does not decrease my speed.
I use AVG (free edition) at home, but when the antivirus software "goes down" I use free online scanning from sites like infectedornot.com, bitdefender, etc :)

I use NOD32 as well. It is by far the best AV program I have ever used. From personal experience, I have installed Norton and McAfee on several systems, and it really slows them down. NOD32 is extremely fast when scanning, but still catches more than McAfee and Norton. It also updates every time the virus signature database is updated.
the new norton isnt slow at all still a POS but isnt as slow
mcaffee anyday norton slows your boot time by like 3-4 mins n thts on a decent computer
