30,000 people went to the Superdome. It was considered a safe zone.

New Orleans is below sea level. There weren't many safe zones once the levees broke. That's when most of the damage occured. Flooding is 20 feet in places.

You're right about the person who shot at the helicopter. There are also a bunch of carjackings going on. People are desperate to get out. Unfortunately events such as these can bring out the worst in people. But, in many cases it can bring out the best. The doctors and nurses are not leaving the hospitals, the emergency personnel are not leaving, and rescue relief is on its way. Yesteraday, sports enthusiasts in the area were encouraged to join in the rescue if they had a boat. Hundreds turned out to join the efforts. Many rescues were made that way.

I know it was a safe zone, I was just curious why someone would prefer to stay in a small wooden shack than a huge concrete stadium.

Well I'm sure they will have a rethink on the levvies. They obviously aren't as strong as they were advertised. It's so sad at a time like this that some people still think of themselves. It is dispicable and frankly looters should be shot on sight.

You have to understand the gulf culture. Alot of these people have been riding out hurricanes Their entire lives. Considering how many we get hit by a year, that's quite a few hurricanes in a lifetime. I'm sure that's why there were still a lot of people there. Actually it was no suprised that the levee failed. Last hurricane season I saw a television show explaining the layout of the lake, levee and location/elevation of NO. They knew it was going to break and kill a bunch of people eventually but there were no funds available to fix it. Louisana and Mississippi are extremely poor states with the majority of the residents living well below poverty level.

hmm Mabe the us should have donated all of tsunami relief money to fix New Orleans and the water breaks on the Mississippi River? Selfish Americans!

I hear about those things more and more the last few years, where paramedics and firemen are aproached very agressivly.

I've had sort of a news-blackout for a week or so due to some crazy working hours at work, just yesterday all I knew was that a hurricane had hit in some place in the US (so what else is new), then I actually watch a news report and possibly thousands have died and its chaos all around! This is disturbing!

I still think that without the US infastructure and experience (with extreme weather) it could have been far worse.

Because they've been without food or clean water since Monday in 95 degree heat. If they have shelter, they are without electricity, no air conditioning, or plumbing. The stench at the Super Dome is said to be unbearable. Dead, bloating bodies are in the water and laying around the city and helicopters have been flying by people who have been waving them down. I imagine my temper would be beyond the boiling point.

I'm not excusing the behavior, but I sure am glad it's not me.

Anyway... its sounds more like the looters are looting food and supplies. I mean seriously, all that food would be wasted because of loss of refrigeration and the supplies would inevitably be water damaged. The store owners will have a complete loss according to the insurance companies - and these people know that.

If I was in New Orleans and my kid needed clothes... NOTHING would make me hesistate about breaking glass in some clothing store to get him clothes for the night. And nothing would stop me from getting that child fed.

Its not like people are running off with 40" plasma televisions - where the hell would you load them? There's no vehicles to load them onto either - and how would you make your way out of the city without it getting inevitably damaged by water?

Aside from that - I think they really need to consider abandoning downtown New Orleans... they state the coastal degeneration will bring the ocean straight to downtown New Orleans within this coming century. So what's the point really? To save some historic French shopping district? That would be the biggest waste of Federal money since the Iraq war.

As far as sympathies from Europe and Asia - that's all fine and good. But don't waste your time. They started some collection at my workplace - I live in Wisconsin where the only threat is tornadoes - and all I thought when they mentioned the collection was - aren't we already paying for FEMA through federal taxes? And who's going to get these 'collections'?

What I'm really peeved about is the Midwest getting slapped with higher gas prices even though very little of our gas comes from the Gulf refineries.
The price went from 2.72 a gallon to 3.40 in the course of days. Now's theres the looting!

The problem with the looters in New Orleans is that the majority are armed and very desperate. Apparently one man shot another simply to get to the food first, I would imagine that shot man is near detah due to the festering wound (from dirty water), is it still justified to clothe your child if you kill another human in the process? Of course not.

As for aid from Europe and Asia, we will of course help in any way we can, that is what allies do. However it appears George W Bush in his infinite wisdom has told us to keep out of the US's business. Charming.
As for what they need to start doing, i honestly don't know. I would have said, start evacuating people but they are hardly going to send an unarmed rescue helicopter into an area where people are shooting at it.

Oh, and as for getting peeved...of course I would be annoyed at a helicopter flying past me but that is no excuse to shoot at rescuers. They are just doing their job, and a fine one at that, and should not expect to be shot at by fools with guns

I think your getting caught up in media sensationalism. All it takes is one or two bad individuals to label the whole crowd as murderers and rapists - and make global headlines. You're talking about maybe 100-150 criminals running around the city terrorizing people - possibly including some escaped prisoners during the local prison evacuation.

I was watching some CNN last night and some of the anchor-hosted shows were obviously flamboyant in their attitudes - one in particular - went from being very concerned to being very indifferent in a manner of a second. She obviously was posturing for ratings by playing up the situation.

BTW it takes more than 'a few' individuals to scare 30 or so people into creating their own security cordon.

I haven't clicked on your link yet - I will - but there were 2 reported rapes at the Superdome (source: bbcnews) - in a crowd of 30,000... I don't believe that makes the whole crowd rapists.

As far as rescue efforts - I think you really need to understand how inaccessible the city really was. As you see on the right, the city is really part of the ocean right now.

My prayers go out to everyone in LA and MS who have gotten hit by this hurricane.

I just heard on a local news radiostation that a Dutch fregat has been dispatched to New Orleans (from the Dutch Antilles). Wow, I hope that's just a 'just in case' measure because it would mean nothing good regarding America's capability to handle this. (serious, not in spite)

Like the city of New Orleans a great deal of my country lies beneath sea-level, whe are (so to speak) continiously battleing the sea with dikes and the delta works (basically whe don't want to move to Germany :D) I think that when New Orleans should become a habitable area again it will probably adopt similar measures. Sadly the US has legislation prohibiting foreign contractors from working its shores and inland waters (dredging and such) and thereby excluding a lot of knowledge. My country hosts some corporations that have a great deal of expertise in these things.

Here's their plan.... and this sounds really crazy, but it should work.

First, they plan to plug up the holes in the leeves. Then they plan to wait for the lake and the river to drain back down to their normal levels. When this happens, the water inside the city will then be higher than the water in the river & lake. Poke NEW holes in the leeves but down at the lowest end of town. Let gravity take its course. When the levels balance out again, the theory being that most of the city will then be drained, plug up the new holes, and get the pumps working again. Once all of the pumps are up and running they can suck out 1 inch of water per hour, or 1 foot every 12 hours. If they only need to pump out 10 feet or so, that can be done in about 5-6 days.

But that's when the real cleanup will begin.
