Instead of doing that, try simply running the system files checker on your system by opening the command prompt and typing in sfc /scannow You'll need your Windows XP CD handy. If all else fails, wait till tomorrow when Microsoft releases Windows XP Service Pack 2, it may fix your problems.
I ran the scan with the XP CD on and nothing happened, no final message apperared to warn me the computer would blow up in 15 sec so I guess it was ok. Does that mean I've got to run a brand new XP installation?Quote:

No, not exactly. What that does is scans all your system files and replaces them with good original copies. It should reinstall the Group Policy Editor.

if you start it, isn't there a checkbox to 'load at startup' that can be unchecked (untested)
