I still stand by that 100%. Either implicitly or explicitly, you are passing back that type. No matter what, that type will be passed back. When you return null, you are returning a nulled type of the return type. You are not returning a null object, there is no such thing.

also, if u dont return nothing (returning void) you just cant use it..just try this code in c# and see what happens:
