Excuse me Apoc... that's EXACTLY what we have now. Maybe you've never ridden on the crap pot-holed roads round where I live, skidded off and had to spend 5 HOURS in the crappy hostpital waiting room, get forgotten once, get pointed in the wrong direction once then return 3 weeks later only to be told that they have lost your x-ray!!! Sure here in Britain to cost of petrol is the highest in the world but what you must remember is in other countries they have to pay all kinds of road tax which we don’t. That especially applies in the rest of Europe.

I think they should put a huge tax on being prime minister. and possible one on being called Tony.

I think they should make the national lottery non-profit-making. The wages those people take is horrendous.

It's voluntary taxation anyway, it's more or less government business. In fact it's not just a voluntary tax, it's a tax on the poor, because they're the ones who need the hope that they might get rich one day.

To get back to the original question - after much consideration I will NOT be joining the "Don't buy petrol on Mondays" campaign for 2 reasons.

Firstly, if we need to make a journey then we will make it anyway. If we were sympathetic with the "Dont buy on Mondays" idea then all we would do is buy on Sunday or Tuesday. If we need petrol then we need petrol. (Can you see anyone with a company car telling their boss that they refuse to see a particular client on Monday because they are low on petrol? I think not!!!)

Secondly, our gripe is with the government, not with the petrol stations who to a large degree are small businesses - just like some of the freelancers on here - who operate on fairly slender margins. Not buying on Mondays will upset the cashflow of some of these small businesses possibly forcing some of them to close, giving the "big boys" even more clout.

I am not being negative here - just realistic. Surely we want to get our point across to the government without hurting local businesses. I fear that the only way to do this effectively is wait until a General Election, but this won't have any immediate effect.

...but some very exciting things are appearing that may lean toward making petrol prices irrelevant.

1) New cool cars, like the Honda Accent. Something like 30km/litre. (I hope I did the conversion right from 71mi/gal) It's a gas/electric hybrid.

2) Cars that run on air aren't too far off! At the Virginia Poytechnic Institute, some buddies of mine are working on one right now. They've obtained from the US Dept. of Defense a hydrogen cell, and rebuilt the propulsion mechanism (since it doesn't have an 'engine' per say anymore) to use it. The car has a max velocity of about 180km/hr and has a single biproduct. No pollutants or noxious gasses. The only thing the car makes is pure, drinkable liquid water. To prove that's what it was, they had to drink it for the judges. ^_^

by the sound of it is doesn't run on air it runs on hydrogen, I'm sure we'll have a huge tax on that if these things come out.

But at least hydrogen is easy to get yourself. It wouldn't be too tough to set up an electrolysis tank in your garage. ^_^

They'd make it illegal to make without an obscure hard to get licence. (saying it's to prevent explosions but really to get money)

I think it was Toyota that made a car a while ago that ran on gas/petrol/some kind of fuel and electricity. Or... maybe it wasn't electricity, but a big flywheel... or maybe that was another car... *Confused already*

Anyway this car had partially electromagnetic brakes, and when you braked you actually got most of your kinetic energy back as electrical charge rather than wasting it as heat. The fuel engine was used for speedy acceleration but an electric motor was used for maintaining high speeds.

Possibly in order to be true you might have to replace the electromagnet concept there with the flywheel concept. I've heard of both I think, can't remember which was Toyota.

If anyone's going to come up with a revolutionary new design for a car then they had better make it a genuinely practical proposition. Does anyone here remember the short-lived but long-mocked Sinclair C5 (except for Clive Sinclair)???
