In your car, you're far more likely to die from operator error (yours or somebody elses) than from manufacturing defect, but that's a telling point. Life is a terminal illness, and the death rate is still one per person. We tend to worry too much about the smaller probabilities than the larger ones.
It seems like I read something about a subject called (I think) homeoisis, that showed that for many toxins (lead included, and possibly radiation), a sufficiently low level of exposure actually tends to increase overall health. It's as if a slight challenge to the bodies defenses actually strengthens the defenses. That's not unreasonable.
In short, just wear your lead boxers like a radiologist, and hope for the best.
