Is the MS Office written in VB?

In any event, VB.NET seems to be able to deliver code for most tasks that rivals VB6 performance wise... so I would suspect we will seen more commercial apps being develop with it...

But as far as VB6, well, using API calls (which invokes prewritten C code) to do tasks you could otherwise do with native Vb6 commands, seems to give a VB6 program a performance edge.

I always remember the day I tested a simple comparison of a VB6 program reading in a 75mb file, versus a C++ program that did the same... and being surprised they performed at the same speed. For file access, there is no difference...

I think everyone should be required to write at least ONE app (it can be a small, simple console (or DOS) based app) in ASM. Then you can truly be gratefull for all that most languages "hide" from you.
To anyone who thinks VB is the dregs of the programming world: I sort of understand, BUT, don't knock it untill you've tried it. How long does it take me to build a simple Notepad in C++ -- two days and a very thick book. How long does it take in VB? 1 hour.
If control ,speed and performance are importaint, learn C++. If you are looking for a RAD tool (that's Rapid Application Development, not rad as in cool) then VB is a way to go (not I didn't say the way to go).
I've been around the programmer's block a few times and for some time. Here's what I have learned: Nearly 80% of all languages out there are the same, just the syntax is different. I agree with Spetnik about learning other languages first.... might I also add ASM to that list..... by learning how ASM works, it has given me some insight on writting code that runs faster (microseconds, but repeated thousands of times, it can add up).
I agree that VB is a horrible first language. It teaches all kinds of bad habits. And I shudder to think that it's still being taught in schools around the world (and probably the world too).

Languages like Python are better for introductions to programming, in many cases.

And C++ is actually very resistant to buffer problems. The idea is you use the library components, and your problem is mostly robust.

C is horrific for it though.

www.globalviewing.com the program generating those images and uploading them is a VB app. We only used Java to display it in a browser so that netscape viewers can see it as well.

www.mastersaw.com is another program completely programmed in VB by my company. try this site, it's the new version but not live yet

I doubt anything hardcore in microsoft products was created with VB, but I have no doubt in my mind that they interfaces for some of their programs were done in VB, and then they used C or C++ to create the underlying code to do lower level stuff.

Small surprise. In Win2k/NT, and probably XP, there is one way to access the hardware(HDD in this case). The API. In the others, I imagine that you could have some fun with assembly to read straight from the hardware, but that is irrelevent in this case. If both languages go through the same stopping point, the speed is going to be the same. However, you can rest assured that if you read the entire file, one byte at a time, you would note a large difference in speed.

Bounds checking: What do you sacrifice? Of course, speed. In reality, if you need bounds checking, you have a problem, and your code needs fixing.

Pointers: Yes you generally need them. Most VB programs use them as well, though youd never really know it. Anything Dimmed as an object of some sort (not to be confused with a UDT) is a pointer. However, you lose a lot of functionality. For isntance, in VB, you technically COULD create a type of linked list, but every node would be a COM object. What a waste.

In reality, you sacrifice power for simplicity. You also limit your options.

I could go on, but then I might be accused of bashing VB ;)

I haven't really seen too many applications that require the speed of C++ now that we are in the days of 1-3Ghz processors...

Drawing applications like photoshop with filtering effects, yes, high-end video games, yes, anything else... no real particular reason to use C++ exclusively.

I usually prefer to consider the portability aspects. A program written in good C++ can run on most systems :)

most imperative programming languages are inefficient.

i've used VB for a few years...started C++, don't even have vb on this machine anymore :cool:

VB6+down does have limits in what it can do. You can also disable bound checking+other stuff to make it work at a nearer speed to C++ like 80% add or take. Also, you can reach near same functionality with API. C++ still kicks VBs stuff for some things like high functionality games and such because you still can't have the same power. What I'm excisted about is VB.NET

got a copy. With most of the functionallity of C++, and the speed, VB will no longer be a "toy language".

Also, VB is great for internet Apps(servers, spiders, clients, etc)... Not just database apps. For example , the school is going to use my Proxy Server written in VB6. I'm still learning VB.NET

do we have any old school ASM programmers in here? i prefer that to both the others, if i really want power and speed(in which case i realize that making something really good takes time)[most of the time i use mainly asm in a C prog, is __asm blocks] for times when i have something middle of the road, i use straight up C, and for things i need fast or that have to do with internet or databases, i stick w/vb. that's my preference(i guess i'm just wierd, though, because i'll still write a lot of games in pascal...)

Well your professor is right and he is wrong. He is right in the fact that VB is useless in the competitive enviroment in the sense of using visual basic as the core language. However he is wrong with the fact that VB is useless as its great to write utility programs in.

Wow, this thread arose from the dead...

Anyway, I think most of the people that slam VB are programmers that have just started learning C or switched to C, and think its the answer to every development solution, and that would be just ridiculous.

As someone mentioned, you could go as far up to Assembly, and even then, hell, might as well type machine code (that would be about 150% faster than C code).

Hmm, there's got to be a great VB game on planetsourcecode.com (they have thousands of VB games, some have very good ratings) , but I dont have the time to look now.

VB rules!!!!! It really does take MUCH longer to program in C/C++, and you have to be FAR FAR more careful (ie. takes longer and harder to debug) since your apps are more prone to memory leaks and such. C++ is great if you need the low-level functionality and speed, but otherwise, why not just use the all-around easier language? Oh, and my buddy sold a program (written entirely in VB) to the courts for about $20,000 per copy (3 copies). How do you like that?

IF that was true why would they make office in vb?

As I understand it, the early version of office were written in vb 'cause Ms could produce a prototype quickly to see how it'd look and add extra ideas into it, when they were happy with it, they re-created it in VC++ or their equivalent of it, then marketed / sold it.

Dunno the truth in that but I've read that a couple of times from mags now.

VB doesn't have the functionality though to carry out the function used in some of the offices applications though.:confused:

Maybe they only mapped out some of the design & code then, dunno - what are you thinking of - what functionality?

Office is office funtionality wrapped around COM.
Now tell me how that couldn't be VB ;)

I think you'll find that Visual Basic was written in a Microsoft Office or several offices on the Microsoft campus..

Humppf - If you run any Microsoft Office application through the dependency walker program (see project requests) you will see that the VB runtimes are not listed and since the "VB program without runtimes" project (see project requests) is vapourware I think you can reasonably conclude that Microsoft Office was not written in Visual Basic.
