I'm kinda liking Net Walker...although it's not very descriptive :(
Urgh!! IS! I always found any computing classes extreamely dull...they always seem to spend house showing you how to do menial tasks that no-one in their right mind would want to do anyway...

You're not the only one who's bored...I'm skipping Staff Development at the moment... the session I'm currently missing is called "Database & Spreadsheet" (see what I mean... AND they should have been plural not singular in the title!!! :( ) Next we get to do "Computing without the computer"...ooh! Won't that be fun? I fell asleep in the last staff development I went to so I don't see the point in going :)

Mmmh! I just did a search for "matthew malston" and have told it to search 9 pages on each search engine... when it gets to Yahoo! it bombs out with a "" error message
I got another suggestion too... in the listview box of results it might be nice if it displayed which search engine it found the result on and which page too... :) that would be useful for people trying to get their page registered on lotsa search engines and using your program to check their progress :)

Talking about the results listview box...it would be good it the program checked each result and ranked them by how relavent they are to the search text (like a result on page 9 of Google would be far less relavent than a result on page 1)...I realise that it would do this within each search engine...because of the way the search engine returns the results but it would be good if your program did it for all the results as a whole at the end :)

Perhaps a "Save Results" (to a text file, database etc) on the file menu might be good
Let me know if you figure out how to stop the Internet Transfere Control dead in its tracks (instead of having to wait for it to finish) too... :)
Perhaps a "censor" to root out porno sites (by checking in a list of keywords)...if it makes it as far as family use :)

lol thanx for all the ideas matthew, it bombed out on Yahoo with a blank error message??? that strange, did the program close after you pressed the message boxes button?, if thats the case, then I need to put error handling in it, but if not then I must have put a message box in someone where I should have lol. Hmmmmmm thats weird.
anyways the icon doesn't really resemble anything, it was just in my icon collection and I thought it looked cool, so I used :D.
With the names I like Whatson and Net Walker and can't decide between the two though.
Also with the listview adding what search engine then it would have to be something like Y1 (for yahoo 1). Y2 (for yahoo page 2) etc in some sort of short thing, because other wise it would take up too much of the title space in the listview anyway it is something to think about thanx. :)
****, I just found another bug, :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: when cancelling a search, if you have it searchng the top 9 pages it won't cancel until its search all nine pages, that another bug in it, I wonder if I'll ever fix all the bugs in it and actually finish it, Normally I get bored with a project and chuck it on the scrap pile, lol suprised I haven't done it with this projec yet. so who was asking about making a search engine like program, was it someone using this forum? or someone else.

Sorry...it wasn't a blank error message...I must have forgotten to paste it in...I'll download the program again and try to recreate it for you... "On Error Resume Next" would be good, methinks :D - 'tis my favourite line of code :)
With the extra fields taking up too much room in the list view box...the form is resizable...the listview has scrollbars and resizable colums...I wouldn't worry about it :) perhaps you could give the user the option (on that general options tab :) ) which fields are displayed...maybe even have the program save the widths of the column headers?
Go for Whatson...has a nice ring to it :)

**** lol, I almost forgot about this project lol I haven't worked on it since my last post on this topic lol, I guess I spoke to soon about usually getting bored of a project lol, I've been busy filling in online forms with the inet control just playin around work out how to manipulate forms and fill them in with out having to use a browser control lol.
Anyways I better get back to work on this project lol, I'll get there eventually :D.

Right, Crypt... the error occurs if it's set to search the first 9 pages (maybe 8, 7, 6...haven't tried them!) when it searches Yahoo!. This is the error it displays:
Ooh!! Dammit! Just tried it an the error ne'er came up!! You've fixed it, haven't you, you cheekey little monkey!! :) Or perhaps it only comes up on my machine at work...I'll try it again on Wednesday (lucky me's got Mon an Tue booked off :D )...
On another note...I know what you mean about getting bored with projects and never really finishing them :( ...it only ever happens with my private projects tho...guess at work there's more reason to stick at them and get them finished :)

You basically build you help system as a website and then compile it into a help file (*.chm)

VBWeb has a tutorial on HTMLHelp also, it's fairly easy to add to your application.
One downside is that your users must have The HTMLHelp view but I think it comes with IE4+ and Win98+ so that shouldn't be a problem.

lol nope I haven't updated it without telling you lol :), version 1.5 has always had an about form lol.
Although I should edit it and fix the google bug (when it only finds one page of results the results from that one page are loaded say 9 times if it is set to search 9 pages) it would only take me two minutes to fix but lol I am just so tired with that program, lol the code just looks so boring when I open it up now lol, I just can't be bothered touching it, strange isn't it, how I can get so close to completion and then loose all intrest.
it happens with all my projects I was working on an internet timer a while back, got it nearly finished, apart from attaching a few options to it, and then couldn't be bothered, it happens with the majority of my projects as soon as I get the hard stuff done I loose intrest.
But I will work on this as soon as I get my focus back, I have worked to hard on this just to through this project away lol.

Did a search for "WinZip" using this version's default settings and half way down the list there was about 70 blank entries (no title or url) then an urless (can you say that? :confused: ) with a title of "hr"...like the format of some search engine was prehaps different and the first thing it picked up on was a horizontal rule...? Hmmm...
You should perhaps put a validation bit o' code in that dismisses any results with blank titles and urls. :)

I think I will put in a piece of code that if a title is blank it will put the url of the site in the title, sound ok? better than dismissing that search results :).

Yeah, I could add the logging bit myself, but I've got no idea how to make a sctipt erm...stream(?)...a file. I presume it checks the referer page to check noone linked to it does it? :) Think my asp book dicsusses streaming binary files in like chapter 3000 or something... haven't got that far! :rolleyes:

yup I'll send the script to you now, I don't have a clue how it works I didn't write it lol I don't have a clue about perl, but I assume it just checks the reffer against the list of domains you set up for it to only let them download from.
lol I don't think tasmail has outlook express support but I found their pop3 address so I use outlook to check my mail, but I can't find their smpt address so I can't send with outlook.

Erm...yeah...I just figured out their pop3 server...and their smtp server...tis "mail.tasmail.com" on port 25. Both servers seem to actually be running on "swan.tasmail.com", so go figure :)
Can't really test the smtp server here (at work) cos outlook express won't connect to servers outside our crappy firewall, but I managed to telnet into both of them. Retreived your last email to me but I don't know smtp so I couldn't reply :)

I think you can specify as many subdomain names (within your domain) for a machine as you like in your DNS.

yeah I can have subdomains on my domain name, like yourname.yourdomain.com sort of thing, but I just don't know how to set them up to work on the free server which is hosting my domain name.
Altavista have changed their search cgi so the search url is different, so this version posted here won't search altavista anymore also altavista changed there layout which fixed a few bugs (no more need for filtering carrage returns), I have updated it so it searches altavista again:

the download is alot bigger this time because since I made the previous version I have downloaded service pack 4 which has updated versions of most of the controls whatson uses so I have added the controls to the zip for those who haven't update to sp4.
I am getting really bored of whatson, even though the above updated whatson only took 5 minutes to fix, I just couldn't be bothered with it, if this keeps up I'll probably release the source of whatson, and chuck it in all together.
