i actually thought the word ***** can from much later than that. from king edwards time i believe, it was written on the doors of rapists and stood for

"For Unclean Carnal Knowledge" and it has been in the oxford english dictionary for quite a few years now. but the definition they use for it is mainly the slang ones, like ***** off etc.

i could be wrong but that was how i always understood it. and was english around 3000 years ago, i wouldn't have thought it would have been that well developed.

There was a documentary all about that word in the UK a few months ago...should have watched more carefully - I'd then know the answer to your question!

I'm probably slightly geeky, but I make a point of not starting a conversation about anything computer-related with anyone. If they ask me a question, then I help. I'm basically a walking database. I do a lot of other stuff besides computers (music, scuba diving and various other sports), so I try and keep off the computer when possible. However, the fact that there is so much money in the industry keeps me coming back.

The word 'nerd' originated with Dr. Seuss. He invented the word to name a short red critter that was booksmart and antisocial. I wonder how many other words he brought into the language?

I just want to say that I am not a Nerd, in case somebody is counting.

and for the record: I also am not a geek.. Im married - have a kid - drive a scion tc that I paid for in cash - my wife drives an Acura MDX which I bought for her - and I rather enjoy partying etc - .. not a geek :) lol

Complete Nerd at the office (cos I own it :bigyello: ) at home... Nerd as im a Trekkie, and Stargate, and Atlantis :bigyello:

But in my own defense, like going out (yep really) and do have a lot fo friends of the non industry kind and have a fine looking girl...

I'm not a nerd either. Other than programming, I skateboard, DJ, play keyboards and synths, remix as well as create music. My regular job is production welding.

Also I have many friends (mostly girls thanks to my best friend Jackie), and I'm in my intimacy stage now.

True. Has anyone see the movie Revenge of the Nerds (1 and 2)? They are absolutely great. I downloaded them just recently... Emmm, I mean bought! Bought them just recently :)

Just kidding, I'm about the same. I make a very good living of of it, and I spend about a third of it partying every other day :D

I think people already know me well enough to make their own minds up.

I've been learning ASM for a month and I am already doing DMA graphics :D

I think it all depends if you program at home. I work to live, not live to work so I do not, as a rule, program anywhere but work (I only program at home if work related).

Well that is true, but we all (probably) started programming at home. I doubt that anyone got a job as a programmer and then started learning :)

We learned the basics of programming at university. (Although I already learned it at home :p )

I just want a programming job that lets you work any hours you want, unlimited. Turn up at noon one day, work right through until 2pm the next day (26 hours :D) then go home sleep for a bit then get back to work by 11pm.

That would rule. Except there are no companies in Derby (probably England) that work like that.

Im a programmer now, I dont spend much time on hte computer outside of the office. But when I was in college for network security all i did was play counterstrike 14 hours a day/7 days a week... No lie, ask intel sucks

WhenI'm on a computer I do 1 of 2 things, code or surf.

I generally surf coding sites too.

I code surfing sites as well :)

Well i spend most of my free time in front of the PC, but still for some reason im one of the best basketball and football players in our class, and most people around here (my town) are the same, they all like to sit in front of the PC, thats why no one here calls anyone else a nerd or a geek, the problem is, 98% of the people just play CS 1.6 or Warcraft, only 2% are programmers, for example there are about a 1000 people in our school, and only one person becides me knows a programming language.

It's a good thing i study VB at home, cuz in PC class we are going to study... PASKAL!!!! I bet half the people here havent even heard of it.

Hello! We all went to school too. PASCAL is likely to be the first language you learn at all times because it is seen as the simplest of the 3rd generation languages. It is effectively a stepping stone to the more powerful languages (C++, VB, Java etc)

We had a secret society in college. We'd leave little symbols all over the campus notifying when illicit Quake (1) and Warcraft (also 1, this was a VERY long time ago now :D) touraments were scheduled after hours.

Me and Chris were the only 2 people there who knew how to disable the windows "educational" shell and within 3 hours of the nice new network being installed, we'd phished the admin's password and it was all ours for the 2 years until we left :D

It's too simple and too useless, you cant do anything seriuos with it, and i see no problem with starting learning VB as your first language, I started learning vb when i was 13, and its very easy for me.
