What is Deaf Valley?

I've been to Death Valley...and lived.

Deaf Valley is the original nickname for Tiger Stadium.

They fired Brian Kelly, and my youngest brother sent me a clip of WWII soldier reading the "Hitler Dead" edition of Stars and Stripes.

That was pretty much the sentiment, which is in retrospect is pretty insane.

I still had faith that Brian Kelly could turn around the program this year, but it was a devastating loss to Ole Miss, a pitiful win against South Carolina, a loss against Vanderbilt (which hadn't happened in my lifetime), a bye week, and then a loss against Texas A&M where a 4pt lead turned into a 24pt blowout (should have been 31pt but LSU got a TD in mop up time).

Now I'm just glad it's over, but the future is uncertain.

In this day and age of name/image/likeness, I don't know how a season like this where we fire the head coach midseason will affect us.

Then again, look at Penn State where they went from being #2 to firing their head coach after 2 games.

So, it seems like this is just the new era of football.

Yeah, it's a new era. As we move into the realm where players get paid, we'll see a whole new alignment forming.

Schools that don't have lots of money to pay athletes will lose talent to those that do.

The big will get bigger. Those on the margins, will probably fade into irrelevance.

On the other hand, they can still get large paydays by being pushovers for padding seasons.

If you look at the new landscape, there are some players getting paid big time (see Bryce Underwood), but for the most part it is the staff who are getting paid the big bucks.

Last year, LSU's cost was roughly ~$17mil towards players and then $20mil towards staff.

And if you think about it, with Brian Kelly being fired, LSU will be in the same situation as the Saints where "dead cap" salary will be a serious issue.

Out here, it is Boise State. They already recognize that they can't compete with wealthier schools. I expect that disparity to grow.

Ashton Jeanty turned down bigger money to play at Boise, which appears to have worked pretty well for him. Will others make that choice? Probably not all that many.

Boise State did really well for a short time when I was growing up, but I remember they relied on trick plays a lot which is very high risk/high reward.

Perhaps some will choose for smaller programs so that they get to showcase their skills early rather than sitting behind big money players? Or perhaps they will not.

I do expect the landscape to change dramatically, though.

I never know when this event happens.

I still don't know, but I do know it is in October, and we're running out of that month.

It almost has me spooked.

I'm aghast at the ghouls, though I don't know which is witch.

I found a 4-leaf clover at work while I was smoking my cigar.

I literally haven't found one since I was in 1st grade, almost 30 years ago.

I can't say I've been looking. Still, if I were to find one today, it would have been frosted.

Not even sure there's clover around here.

It's been cold here too, though cold is relative. The high is 70 with a projected low of 47 and humidity around 45% (pretty low).

It was too chilly for me this morning, but around 2PM it felt really nice outside.

We've had a warm streak. Been 75-80 the last week. Suppose to be 80 tomorrow. 80 in November, that's unusual for @ here.

I got a bit cassé for the Halloween
