caching would be efficient only if there was a limited amount of possibilities, you would have to test out how many different shapes you are dealing with.

2. cut the quads into 2 triangles accross their botton-left and top-right and add their area's together
Poor bloke, that's a bit unfair. I don't see why it should ned to be updated to later versions anyway, there is so little C# specific stuff in the book that is reliant on a perticular VS version. I thought it was a good book anyway.Quote:

i do not see how triangles is "ugly"
corners of quad = A,B,C,D
corners of triangle 1 = A, B, C
corners of triangle 2 = C, B, D
square size1 = E, F (E=SmallestX of A,B,C _ F=SmallestY)
square size2 = G, H (same but for triangle2)
area = square1.x*y + square2.x*y
EDIT NOTE: Divide two

You know you could code the area calculation in Inline IL just the way you can use inline ASM in C++. There's a tool by a Microsoft dude to include your IL code in the compilation :)

I'm giving serious thought to posting the map-editor exe on here. I don't think I've tested it nearly enough and there are some tedious navigation things I've not addressed yet (all dialogs point to C:\ all the time). But its basically stable.
I'll give it a look tomorrow and then decide whether to release the binaries or not. I want the 3d preview to work first. (thankfully this does not require BSP's or z-order sorting). Phill, Would you be interested in Beta testing the editor?
You'll need C# 2005 though. Thats the only system requirement.
We won't be releasing the game or the source for a while yet though. This kind of experimental coding is not easy. We need your support, people :)
Is the editor doing 2d editing or what's the craic?
The ediitor creates the 3d maps that you see in the screenshots. It uses a plan-view as its primary means of structuring. but enables you to allocate walls, floors and ceilings for each and any part of the map.
Its very sexy.
But not as sexy as when the 3d preview is working. Then it will not be suitable for publishing on VBF because it will be classed as ADULT content because its so good :D
I made one of those for a game I wrote in college. The game was a maze game where you'd to find your way out. That was written in Java, and the editor itself in VB6 :)

I did the same thing(minus the texture thing, a cube had the same texture on all sides), but both the editor and the game were in vb6, but it wasnt true 3d, camera only went on 4 angles LOLQuote:

I think it would be an extremly good idea to get the beta of the editor out, so people could make some maps that we could test stuff on. The 10*10 map you made today is to small to test frustum culling and my other algorights on..:(
BTW Have you tested how much memory we are using by now? I got this incredible good idea on how to do the space partitioning, but then I started to calculate and found out that it would cost us 32Mb on a 100*100 map...:D...and 128Mb on a 200*200 map...:D....how big can our maps become? Does the editor limit it in some way?
I also have some other great ideas...I have been lying and drawing for a few hours now..not sure what it is, this or the doctors appointment tomorrow, or what..but I really can't sleep...:(

Wossname, just out of curiosity, what code are you using to render a texture-mapped triangle/quad?
At the moment we're just using DrawImage(img, point[]) to draw a pair of triangles in place of where the quad would be.
I'm trying to devise a faster way with unsafe code. this turns out to be really hard though because you have to test for quads that are half on / half off the screen.
I have a theory about one method that calculates exactly the right number of pixel operations to do but its a swine to code.
Well, just take your time...I have 10000 differnent really hard algos to test out anyway...so this WILL take time...:)
BTW could you answer me about the map size?
And one other theoreticaly thing. Isn't it true that a cube can draw it self in the theory. It can maximum have two wals that are drawn (SP?) because 0 to 2 will always be culled. So maybe it would be smarter to have a draw function in the cube class, then that one will call each other the 6? wallpart's draw functions? Is that ok for you?
