Hehe cool, it's in French :)
Have a look at mine, in Portuguese :D
DaoK,
If you're using any of the latest versions, then Sentience will have created a file "C:\errors.txt".
Could you post that up here please as it will tell me where Sentience is going wrong.
Ta muchly!
Download my version of the DNA thingy. How I have mine set up, each number may have a creature associated with it. Then, each of those creatures would have certain compoments assoicated with it. You could also use the code as a binary number. Each bite (byte?, which ever is 2 hex digits (or 1)) respersents a componet section (arms, legs, head, ect) and then the value respents the vesion of that componet (for arms: human, robotic, machine gun). Now, I know those are sucky examples. By the way, this verson is coded from the previous versons, with modifications. (Such as there are 2 ways to chage the code, 1 place to read the code, 1 way to save/load codes.)
My verson is attached.
Gaming_World, Arb already said that he won't take code made by other people - so you're only wasting your time :)
There are 2 reasons why I made this:
1) So I can hopefully show arb some good ideas, atleast to me
2) So I have the code done incase I want to make a game that uses it.
Jotaf,
I think Gaming is aware that I won't be using code within the Sentience main game, but he is (or was) working on an external map editor for it.
As soon as I get my arse in gear and send him what he wants he'll probably continue with that - and that will be his little baby, bundled with Sentience.
Besides, as he says, any coding is experience and he may wish to use anything in a future project of his own. If I've whipped the code then things could be awkward later on, especially if the project goes commercial.
Gaming,
Behemoth and I were discussing the map editor and have some info for you. I'll collate it and eMail/post it here in a readable form (drunken notes aren't so legible ;) )
Also, I dowloaded your wotsit last night, but didn't get a chance to look at it. I'm also away from home tonight, so it'll probably be tomorrow before I get chance.
First thing Monday morning, I'll post some comments for you.
Thanks!

Daok,
Dunno if you've checked the main Sentience thread recently, but if you read the post about the dual method of running Sentience (with or without DC's) you might find it works on your machine now.
Have a look and let me know.
Jotaf,
If you want to have a quick think about anything you'd like to see in the diplomacy section of Sentience...
Hum... let's see... I can't think of anything better than "ally/enemy" and "pay tribute" :(
Some way to share technologys, resources (pay tribute), giving mechs, and sharing maps.
And yes, I do know that I am not Jotaf98 but I figured I might as well post my ideas :).
Gaming,
All ideas are welcome regardless of who they come from! :)
Those are pretty much what we've got already, along with a whole seperate section on infiltration etc.
Jotaf,
I'm disappointed in you.
well for infatration, stealing every thing you can share (technologys, resources, mechs, and maps), and possibly sabatosb (constrion, posser, deationation of a super-weapon in their base, ect.)
Com'on Arb, by saying "tributes" I meant that you could give anything you wanted to the other player (really :) )
And there isn't much you can do in the diplomacy screen anyway :p
Maybe you could include mass destruction wepons like nukes, ion cannons and weather storms ;)
A "base infiltration" screen too would be cool :)
Another cool screen you could make would be the "hacks" screen, where you could hack into the enemies' systems and steal technologies, give wrong informations to their mechs (like "those turrets in the enemy's base aren't as powerful as we thought, attack them" :) ) , make a building or mech self-destruct, build things in the middle of nowhere, etc :D
Nuke is a little under-powered for this game. :)Quote:

EMP, no damage but disables all there stuff for xxx turns, emptys their batterys, ect.
Jotaf,
The infiltration screen is also going include things like hacks. We were trying to come up with some ideas for that - I'll see if I can dig out the list and post it here - it might jog your creative talents...
Gaming,
What's sabotosb, constrion, posser?
FYI, as attached...

I had another idea regarding diplomacy. When factions are "talking" it is possible to switch on a virus scanner, preventing transmission of viruses, but incurring the wrath of the other faction ("you dont trust me! war!") as an additional line of defence.
Ok, a comprehensive list of espionage / terrorism software / viruses.
Name : effect : relative tech level : diplomatic effect : prevention / cure
Armageddon : slow deterioration leading to eventual eradication of a faction : very high : atrocity? auto vendetta? : preventative software? no cure?
Shutdown : shuts an opposing factions production and research down : high : considerable anger : preventative software, hard reboot.
Steal Tech : does what it says on the tin : low / medium : annoyance (if noticed) : preventative software, no cure (once its gone its gone).
Steal Cash : see Steal Tech
Reroute Processing 1 : Steals buildings / units from opposing player (temporarily?) : considerable annoyance : preventative software, hard reboot.
Reroute Processing 2 : Uses opposing players processing points for own uses : annoyance (if noticed) : p.s / hard reboot / manual reroute.
etc
give me some more ideas...
"Resources exist to be consumed...And consumed they shall be!"
My very sucky spelling abilities of:
can't get it close enough for word to spell correctly, construction, posers
How about deleting technology?
Hum, yeah, they'd have to research it again :)
The kind of base infiltration I was sawying was... having a really small mech that doesn't appear in the radar, and can go into an enemy building... from there on, you can hack into their system more easily and do that sort of stuff; steal the building; or self-destruct it if you want (might be good for defenses and core buildings) ;)
Arbiter I am sure than you know than a good game do not need a manual to install it...Quote:

Daok,
I don't know what you're saying.
If you said that a good game does not need a manual to install it, then you're nearly correct.
However, any game which is in its alpha stages and is being tested for fault resolution might need instructions.
All things nowadays come with instruction - even for installation. In the next game you buy, check the manual - the first thing is how to install it.
^_^I want to play your game please :) :) :)
Daok,
Give me as much information as you can about your system please.
Spec's, OS, and what it runs when it boots.
Load windows with no other software (i.e. nothing in the startup folder, nothing running when windows loads).
Try downloading the latest version (usedc.zip) and running that.
If it doesn't work, open the options.ini and change "useDCs" to "false".
Try running it again.
I downloaded (usedc.zip) and i got Runtime error. I will reboot and will tell you if I got that problem one more time.
30 seconds after the reboot I tryed your application and I got an error at : The game Launching.
The error is : RunTime error 7 : Out of Memory
I will try now "useDCs" to "false". .
The first time i tryed like that and it crashed :
'Sound Options
Voices: True
SFX: True
Music: False
SFXVol: 100
MusicVol: 80
SFXBal: 50
Musicbal: 50
'Pathfinding Options
CalcPathPerTurn: False
ShowPath: False
UseMemDCs: True
---------
The second time I tryed that and It crashed :
'Sound Options
Voices: True
SFX: True
Music: False
SFXVol: 100
MusicVol: 80
SFXBal: 50
Musicbal: 50
'Pathfinding Options
CalcPathPerTurn: False
ShowPath: False
UseMemDCs: False

Any other suggestion ?
This is information about my computer:
P3 600 256Ram
Windows Me
I have only : MY proxy, Dap, windows sound and my scanner in my reboot.
Daok,
Check the Game and Graphics thread - Icheb's confirmed what I thought was the case but couldn't prove myself. It's down to the machine Sentience is running on.
Sentience should run on any machine as long as it doesn't have loads of stuff running on it. Sentience is a bit memory hungry - probably due to shoddy programming.
But it does work!
Dude I can run Quake 3 without problem but not your game :( I am sure than you have excellent graphic and animation but if your game eat more ressource than Quake3 we have a problem :(
Daok,
What you appear to be forgetting is that Quake3 was written over a period of years, by a team of top notch developers and support personnel with a large budget.
Sentience has taken 12 months of coding by myself alone, and graphics done by Behemoth.
They're not even in the same class so it's unfair to draw comparisons, but if you wish - I'll make a few.
The basic fact remains that I can run the game on my machines, many others can run the game on their machines and anyone can run the game on a machine that's had a fresh installation of windows 4+ (no matter how crap the machine is). Quake 3 won't run on anything less than a Cray.
If you can't run it on yours, it's down to the setup of your machine and the way it interacts with Sentience. I cannot take into account every possible machine variation, nor do I intend to try.
Quake3 was written in a couple of languages (C and Asm I think). Sentience was written in VB - hardly world reknowned for it's game creating capabilities.
The game, in its current stages, is provided free of charge on the condition that people who play it provide a little bit of feedback. I wasn't under the impression that Quake3 was free...
If people can't get it to work, I'll do my damndest to fix their problem, speaking to each person individually to fully understand the background of the fault. Do you get personal 1 to 1 support from the developers of Quake3, or do you get a premium rate number to call?
Basically, I've spent altogether too much time on a problem I can't duplicate and which only appears to occur on machine that people have tinkered with.
As far as I'm concerned the problem is a moot one. Sentience runs on a clean machine, which is pretty much all I can hope to achieve. I cannot take into account the setup of everyones machine in the whole world so I'm not even going to try.
If you can Sentience to work then good, enjoy a free game, if not - you've lost nothing. If you really, desperately want it to work - then clean your machine otherwise go and play Quake3.
I wanted to play your game :(
Then I'm afraid you'll either have to clean your machine a bit (which is never a nice thing to do) or find a machine with a relatively fresh Windows install.
Sorry...
I will do a winter format in december :) This might help but I have my ressource is at 87% when I reboot ( 256meg ram ). Any way, Thx for trying to help me ;)
My standard system resources is at about 12 %, thats after a day without warez, with warez i need to reboot a few times.
When i boot up it's only at 56 %...
So, arb, i didnt realise it it was this low till i had a look at it :(
Can this cause the problems with sentience ? (stupid question)
You have a better machine then i have but you might want to change to another win version, ME is a bit buggy.Quote:

Howmuch conventional do you have free ?
Icheb
Icheb,
Conventional doesn't matter within windows (as was pointed out to me).
I need to experiment to find out roughly what % resources Sentience needs.
It's probably around 80% (at a rough guess, on my machine).
Icheb I dont have the money to buy windows XP sorry :( So I am struck with ME.
Ian,
I'm just composing a quick list of graphics you may need to begin working on.
Animated faction logos
Monster houses
Monsters
Air chassis
Sea chassis
Coloured weapons
Weather effects (let me know how you think this may be done)
Splash sceen with integrated logo
Main menu background with integrated logo (lower left with space below for version number)
Animated sensor buildings (couple of)
Animated reactor buildings (couple of)
Animated gun turrets (couple of)
Weapon effects (ranged weapons - let me know about how to do this)
Little mine pictures (for land and sea - varying amounts to denote how heavily mined things are)
Mine pictures for the components screen
Ammo pictures (mostly kinetic, but some laser types for representative purposes)
More buildings (we ain't got many)
Naked women (keep Plend happy)
Missiles for the component screen (big nukes etc)
Some end of game screens (win/lose etc)
Interim screens for other players (faction eradicated)
Backdrop screen for each faction (to display the next player screen on top of)
Maybe think about some custom borders for each faction (around minimap etc - think of the protoss/terran/zerg game interfaces...)
That's it for the time being, but it should give you plenty to work with. No more slobbing around and doing bugger all for you any more matey - you've had your break from Sentience!
I'll expect it all done by Close Of Play Friday.
:D
http://www.howstuffworks.com/question466.htm
check the links at the bottom of the article - it might help us with the little problem...
Cool. Ta.
You off work today? Or can you use the net sporadically at work?
Weather effects:
Lightening/thunderstorm - can burn down trees, hazardous to units
Rain - excessive rain can turn marsh to lakes, dirt to grass, grass to forest, increases rust
Hurricane - can turn trees to tree rubble, hazardous to units
Forest fire - does exactly what it says on the tin, hazardous to units
Earthquake - umm, rearranges mountains, pretty hazardous to units
Tidal waves - can turn coastline squares to sea, hazardous to units
Seabedquake - can raise islands, hazardous to units
Whirlpool - hazardous to units
Weather effects could be categorised via severity and triggered according to global damage. A planet destroyed by nuclear war and pollution is going to be wracked by storms and hurricanes.
Footnote:
Ian, we need graphics for destroyed trees (gradually fading to grass. Maybe 5 frames, lots of fallen trees, many fallen trees, some fallen trees, tree carcasses, faded tree carcasses)
We also need animated burning trees. (Same frame count as the buildings)
Okay then, Diplomacy!
Right, for positive diplomacy changes then the following applies:
ChangeInBaddyDiplomacy = ((DipChangeOfEffect * GoodyDipBen) * BaddyDipBen)
ergo for a gift of 3 hamsters the diplomacy benefit is 5 points on the enemy's table (meaning they like you more - higher is better)
The goody is Mr. Smarm who has a diplomacy benefit of 1.2
The baddy (other player) is Mr. Sleaze, also with a dipben of 1.2
so ((5*1.2)*1.2) = 7.2
The diplomacy benefit means everyone's happy (because they're both smarmy gets)
If we change the recipient to an obnoxious oik then the outcome would be different as follows:
3 hamsters is still 5 points
Good is Smarm = 1.2
Baddy is Oik = .8
so ((5*1.2)*.8) = 4.8
A quick table to summarise positive transactions
Smarm Oik
Smarm 7.2 4.8
Oik 4.8 3.2
This might need some work...
I can help with graphic #18 :D
Just kidding. But after all, you ARE gonna need special effects, and a particle system, even if it's jsut for the rain :)
Busy busy busy busy busy...
I'd forgotten I was still logged in with a window open...Will probably cost me my job...oh well.
My phone battery is flat today, so I cannae ring you. post anything you wanted to say in here & ill pick it up later.
tata then ;)
I want to know what you're doing you spaz!
Are you coming straight to mine, or from your home? Are you eating at mine? Are you bringing any beer? Are you going to bring some clothes you can work in? What kind of times are we looking at?

listening to your narrow minded, childish insults
Are you coming straight to mine, or from your home?
from home, my sisters coming up for a bit and my dad might give me a lift
Are you eating at mine?
I'll probably have a bit of tea at mine, but we're guaranteed to be snacking all night ;)
Are you bringing any beer?
does that mean "Ian, bring some beer"?
Are you going to bring some clothes you can work in?
why? I'm not working tomorrow
What kind of times are we looking at?
about teatime...maybe just after :p ;)
Right, I'll fix myself some tea when I get in then.
Bring some beer.
Bring some clothes you can get dirty (i.e. dusty)
Can you give me any specific time at all please?
Arb: (Sorry to interrupt your conversation :D ) It's an an array of UDTs which contain each rain drop's X and Y positions, each frame you loop trough all of them, move them a bit to the bottom of the screen and if they reach it you move them back up, and draw them. Simple, heh? :) You'll also have to make them start with randome values. With complex particle systems I've managed to make effects like snow, rain, fire, explosions, you name it ;)
Jotaf, can you show me the code for the particle engines you made? As soon as I can get some graphics, I plan on attempting to write a game.
Jotaf : can i have to code (for review only) too ?
Icheb
Hum, the only experience in coding particles engines I have is this (so don't expect much VB code ok? :) ) :
*A particle engine to simulate rain, in the scripting language of a game called Graal
*Two more that simulate snow and fire (very reallistic actually :) ) - there's a picture attached to this post, but remember that they look 1000 times better when animated ;)
*A very simple particle engine in VB... it can simulate sparks and a small wave, but with no big special effects (all I used was PSet :) ). It's also a bit old (it was coded 1 year ago) so if I had done it today it would be a lot better :p
If you find some more people interested in an article on particle engines (how I did these effects), I might write it... it would be a lot better than coding them for you :)
And if you want, I can post the old project here so you can get an idea of how it's done ;)
I wouldn't mind seeing the old project.
I'd say, post the url of the code... ;)
Want to see it too !!
Icheb
bollox **** ****
Com'on, it isn't that good :p
Jotaf,
I'll have a look at that when I get home and post some comments shortly.
