Windows 95 No Copy Paste
RESOLVED
THANKS
Have a Problem which could do with some advice on
Have a Dell Laptop, windows 95
Everything is working, Apart from the copy and paste function
Ive tried reinstalling over the top windows 95, that didn’t help
I cant format and reinstall as need the software which is installed graphicsPro Designer
Copy and paste wont work anywhere desktop, word, explorer etc
Do you know the service or related dll`s which make the clipboard work on windows 95
Have done many searches on internet but haven’t helped also the Microsoft website did help either
Any help on the matter would be appreciated

Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
I used Win95 for several years and never had a issue with Copy and Paste.
Are the menu options disabled? Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V doesn't do anything?
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
The clipboard may be corrupted, or disabled. When you copy something it copys it to the Clipboard so that you can paste it later. check to see that the Clipboard service is enabled. go to START , RUN, Type Services.msc. Look for clipboard and make sure its automatic, and enabled, and started. If it is then we will try something else....
Edit:
Also try this
Download GetOpenClipboardWindow.zip from here:
hxxp://windowsxp.mvps.org/temp/GetOpenClipboardWindow.zip
Unzip and run the tool. Post back what it reports. For best results, run
this utility during the time you encounter the Copy<=>Paste problem.

Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
it's been a while, but i don't think win95 has services.msc.
Go to add/remove programs and see if you have clipbook viewer installed. This might fix it.

yeah it's been a while for me to :)
yes we can check that thru add/remove programs as well like you suggested...
The fastest way to check if the clipboard is working or not is to download the file from the link and run it... the only thing that i am unsure is that will it run on win 95?
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
ok the clipboard viewer is installed
on most applications the copy and paste is greyed out
the services doesnt work on windows 95
however i did open one program called winlog on the PC
it did allow me to copy and i seen in the clipboard viewer
cud paste that to paint
however i cudnt copy again from paint
when i copy anything from word, it just says there isnt enough memory
however have looked and theres 128mb installed
any ideas, cant reinstall as if go over same fault and cant format as have programs i dont want to lose and havent got the install for
any ideas wud be aprrieated cheers

Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
Does your Ctrl key work?
(Hey, someone had to ask it)
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
i never even thought about the keyboard shortcuts. I was considering the right-click menus
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
I just realized that I hadn't thought of the right click menu myself. We make a complementary team. :D

Surely this program isn't holding you back from upgrading from Win95 to XP/Vista? :confused:
There would have to be other software that can do what graphicsPro Designer does 100 times better now as well ;)

Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
Does Windows 95 have updates?
Why not just try update.microsoft.com
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
killerdragon, windowsupdate doesnt work on the older OSes. they have a 5 year product life with another 5 years support cycle. After that, you're screwed.
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
I don't understand why it wouldn't work, afaik Microsoft has stoped providing NEW updates. There would be no good reason to pull old updates.
-

This is the only thing that makes any sense, although why copy/paste should be removed by the group policy admin is anyone's guess.
Do you have a way to check these policies?
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
Is GP even in Windows 95?
I thought GP wasn't introduced until Windows NT [Insert some version], made popular through Win2K and XP
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
that is correct. 95 doesn't have GP, and it doesn't work with automatic updates. that was introduced with win 98. They eventually started releasing patches that worked with 95 on the site, but now if you go to the website with any microsoft OS that precedes 2000 (although i havent' tested ME) it tells you that it's not supported on that website and to get your updates from download central. Also, 2000 no longer includes usability updates and you can only download critical updates.

Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
hi thanks for your input on this
i cant update operating sytem as this then becomes an I.T issue and will probably have to wait months for ti to be updated
as the the graphics pro probably will work if upgrade however am stuck with
cant reinstall have tried that, cud delete drive and install a fresh but lose the graphics pro and dont know where install disks are
laptop works fine just apart from copy and pasting
IT said had a looked at group polocy but with it being windows 95 i dont think it has that, like you said
any ideas, do u think installing ie 5.5 would help?
-

You are right! See link.
Better question is can Win95/98 be bound to a AD domain and have that managed by AD?:afrog:

i cant use usb on it LOL its windows 95
just has software on thats very old and havent got the installation disk for
have got that working , just is bit difficult working when u cant copy and paste stuff
thanks in advance
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
If its just software you need to run, what you could do is run Windows 95 in a VM (hell dosbox might even work).
-

Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
windows 95 has usb support. It's an optional item on the install cd unless you have the very first release of it. It's labeled prominently on the cd it supports USB.
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
ok the installation files are on the hard disk can boot from dos and install from there however this isnt the issue
nor is the usb, ive found a floppy drive so can swap files the old fashioned way
anyway back to the problem no copy and paste
everythin else works with laptop
i can even boot in safe mode then the copy and paste work cud it have anything to do with the video drivers as i set to 1280x1080 screnn size as screen wasnt full size otherwise

Why, on a company laptop, in 2008, are you running Windows 95? :confused:

ok well firstly IT havent a Clue they thought the installing IE5.5 wud have solved
the laptop is an old pentium 2 400mhz has windows 95 as the software which is installed we haven got the installation files and need for a special type of label printer
go everything else working the printers and it works fine
is just the copy and paste
IT dont have a copy of WINDOWS 98 and cant upgrade with any version as its a company laptop and cant put dodgy software on there
not sure it wud work if i upgraded to windows 2000
so seems stuck with it working just this copy and paste issue
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
Really, the laptop isn't worth any more time than you've spent on it.
I work at the local hardware store as mechanic and in cases like these we look at it for 15 minutes, maybe do a reinstall and otherwise just discard it and advise our clients to buy a new one.
Win95 shouldn't be used anymore.
PC's that are built for Win95 should be thrown away.
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
any one

anyone know where to look in registry or files dll i can check cheers

cud it be somethin to do with memory

Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
Ok
Now I am thinking from a different perspective...
1) Which antivirus do you have?
2) If you have an antivirus, then get the latest definitions and then scan the laptop in safemode.
See if this helps...

the virus checker is sophos
its not connected to the network but is IT polocy to have on there
i did try that to make sure however i scanned normally
but not in safe mode
wud u suggest i do in safe mode, or do u think the scan if clear should be ok
hasnt access to internet or anything so wud be surpprised if virus
but cud it be the virus checker, but not sure how to disable
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
It is just a hunch but it might(???) help if you scan in the safe mode. Also make sure that your Virus definitions are up to date...
-
Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
will put in safe mode
do a virus check
do a scan disk
defrag
see what happens

Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
if you have msconfig.exe on your system, you can run that. If not, search for a free program called "startup".

cheers for that am sure that will come in handy on another PC i have
anyway run it
and in startup
theres only the office prog?

Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
i am not referring to the startup folder. I am aware the shortcut bar is usually in there. There's a workaround for not having the program. There are numerous registry keys you can edit/view with regedit.
#
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce registry key
# RunServices subkey : loads immediately after RunServicesOnce and before user logon.
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices registry key
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices registry key
# Run subkey : The Run subkey in HKLM runs immediately before the Run subkey in HKCU.
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run registry key
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run registry key
# RunOnce subkey : primarily used by Setup programs. The HKLM subkey version of RunOnce runs programs immediately after logon and before other registry Run entries. The HKCU subkey version of RunOnce runs programs after Run subkeys and after the Startup folder.
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce registry key
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce registry key XP also has RunOnceEx:
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx registry key
# RunOnce\Setup subkey : specifies programs to run after the user logs on
# Explorer\Run subkey :
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\Run registry key
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\Run registry key
# Userinit subkey : there is an entry for userinit.exe but subkey can accept multiple comma- separated values. Can't find where program starting? Look here.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit registry key
# load subkey :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\load registry key
# All Users Startup folder : very common place to find autostart programs for whoever logs on
Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder
# Startup folder : the most common location for programs to automatically boot from
Documents and Settings\user\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder If you migrated from NT, the path is Profiles\user\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
that's a lot to look through, but the two main keys are these:
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run registry key
* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run registry key
The offending startup program is almost always in one of those two keys.

theres just 3 asminstboot which think is an it thing C:\tngsd\bin\asminstw,exe /bg boot
RNBOstart C:\windows\system\RNBOSENT\SENTSTRT.EXE
and SDTrigger C:\tngsd\bin\strtrig.exe
theres a few bits in HKLM/Run like system tray and browser check
and thats about it

Re: Windows 95 No Copy Paste
browser check?!? Disable that.
You can disable one key at a time by killing the file extension or some such. Make sure you remember the old one. Then reboot and try copy/paste with each one.
