Anyone use jbuilder5 yet? I just downloaded the personel editon.
Yes. I really hope they make JBuilder in C++ like they did for 3.5. The Java version is icky.
BTW, I noticed no real differences. There are sound effects, like when you compile and when an exception is thrown. Ooh.
well, i used 3.5 shortly, and it was OK. As far as i know, i thought that 3.5 was made in Java, and 3.0 was the last made in C++. Wasn't 3.5 out only for a month or so before 4 was released? I thought that 3.5 was sort of like a beta.
Anyway, 3.0 was great, and i would still use that if it wasn't such a bastard when upgrading the JDK.
So who makes JBuilder. borland? Im thinking to switching back to coding in an IDE. But i really dont want to go back to FORTE unless i am willing to spring for another 64Mb of ram. Where can i get JBuilder? Do i have to go to comp usa and purchase it? I know that last question mite sound stupid, but im used to the microsoft way. Spending $$ to get their stuff. Even though i usually goto computer fairs and get the acedemic versions. (which are bascially the same just not in price.)
Borland makes it. you can get the personal edition for free by download at their website (http://www.borland.com) it takes 128 mb of ram though :(
i have run JBuilder with 64 megs. anyone try IBM's VisualAge products?
JBuilder only takes up 40 MB here (actually, the VM takes up that much, JBuilder.exe takes up practically nothing).
ok, well, 128 is recommended
No problem, because I have 512 MB. :p
nice :P But, for someone running with only 64, it's gonna be tight. it might be possible, but i don't think windows is gonna love it. :D
runs fine here just takes a little while to load up. Forte on the other hand is a different story...
isin't like 256 remommended for forte?
I think they actually recomend 128Mb to run FORTE. I tried running it with 64Mb and i took way too long to load up.
wow, i may try that some day, it seems like more people use that than jbuilder
Is it free? JBuilder is for personal use.
the barebones version of Jbuilder and Forte are free
jbuilder 3 -- the university edition (which i have) is a full version and it's free. I would still use it but it is a b*itch when updating the JDK and doesn't have a lot of support of beans and jsp.
i've been looking for VisualAge for java or WebSphere studio on warez channels but cant find it.
sorry, haven't heard of it
does that make me a bad person?
Yes. :)
uh oh
Yes now report to the principals office at once.
i thought i got away from that place for good. lol i got suspended from school for 3 days for using winpopup during my senior year.
whats that the pop up for NT using DOS? That's what a dude i used to work with used to do in the office.
its on all windows machines but the message only pops up on NT and 9x if you have the winpopup program open. On Windows 3.1 the message would come up regardless. The elementary school still had alot of 3.1 machines connected to the same network so they got my nice messages.
hehe, some kids at my school got suspended for using winpopup :D
To get back into the subject there is actually somthing called
JDeveloper 3.2.2 which i am going to start seriously looking in to
because i come from a database backround (Access). Here a little snippet from JAVA pro June 2001 vol 5 number 6
"Oracle JDeveloper is am integrated Java development invironment designed to work with J2EE to buid complex n-teir
applications preferably with an Oracle database at the backend."
Seems to look good but i want to find ou tthe price before i can make any definite conculsions.
wow, sounds good, but i am sure that if it is from oracle it is big$$$
Yeah it's $4800 so scratch that idea.... I IDE looks cool though.
None so far but i thought i would be a good idea to start getting into Oracle. I would like to start programming for the new
Nextel i85s cell phone (the first to run Java apps). Having an application to run with Oracle on the cell would be cool.
Here are two links that are pretty interesting
This one is the Wireless developers home page.
http://developer.java.sun.com/develo...ucts/wireless/
This link is actually off of that page. Im going to sign
up as a Nextel developer. I figured what the heck.
At least i can get x amount off of of cell phone bill
if anything.

Cool, thanks. I was going to do a little with an access database and JSP, but we never got that far in the class. I haven;t done too much java since then, but i really gotta get back to it.
ever use a MySQL DB?
No...... Who makes that? IBM? I like using Access as a backend for VB but it seems a lot of companies are looking for Oracle or SQL server. So i really have too find out if working with SQL server as a back end is the same as using Acess as a back end. It should be since ADO is being used but im not too sure if the type libraries are the same. ADOX 2.1 ADODB 2.1 JRO 2.1
MySQL is similar to oracle or sql server but open source and free for non comercial use. also its alot easier to setup. you can get it at www.mysql.com.
i have used mysql a little, and from what i see i like it. i think that this site uses MySQL.
yup wouldnt doubt it
Personally of all the Java IDEs I've used I like Forte the best. Plus its <blink>FREE!</blink> The SWING designer lets you design forms just like in VB. Its available somewhere on the Sun Java site (which sucks for organization I think). Tho it takes a while to load, even on my Athlon 1.2GHZ w/ 256 RAM!!!
Anyone if any of these IDE's come with Tomcat? I know JBuilder
Enterprise does.
