How can I retrieve a machines lan mac address. thanks in advance, either locally or remotely
Those things don't always work. I'm sure there's something I'm missing as I'm not a network person, but I've never seen that way get a valid MAC address ever. On mine it won't return anything, and on all my other comps it will give different things each time. If you want to know it reliably, run winipcfg.exe and look in the "adapter address" area. You'll also be able to find the address of different hardware if you have both modems and network cards installed.
In Windows 2000, it's ipconfig.exe.

I just checked the following code on my Win2K machine against ipconfig /all and got the same results:
ipconfig returned 00-B0-D0-F2-90-46
the code returned 00 B0 D0 F2 90 46
I don't remember where I found this code, so I can't give any credit for it.
