The computer is new, it has plenty of space left. Processor = 1.2(xyz's), the problem is the clock runs 45 min to 1 hr slow and the computer itself is extremely slow.
I shut down all background tasks, and nothing has changed.
I even did the scan/defrag/etc cr*p
Any suggestions?

Well to get speed you really should format your HD and install win98 and DONT INSTALL ALL THAT DAMN PROGRAMS COMING WITH HARDWARE!!!! You only need the DRIVER not the f***ing Software!
Oh yeah, and make sure you back up your files first ;) Preferably onto another HD. You do have more than one hard disk, don't you? :p
At the current prices, it's stupid to only have one :)

Last time I upgraded my bios, I lost everything. I was pissed.
It only blows away the time (how ironic) and HDD settings. But since BIOSes today are practically completely automatic, you shouldn't have to worry.

I'm not Parksie, but...they're relatively cheap. They used to be plummeting in price, but now they're pretty stable (unlike dirt cheap memory). Western Digital offers an ATA/100 7200 RPM 80 GB HDD for less than $250. But they are also now shipping a $300 100 GB HD.Quote:

A couple of months ago 30GB was about £40 :)
You gotta be careful about those computer shows. If the drive dies, you're screwed. Of course, I got VB5 Enterprise ($1000 retail) from one for $50. It didn't come with a certificate of authenticity. :)
Paying by credit card helps, plus being a paranoid arse and forcing the supplier to sign a little document saying that if anything goes wrong with it and it's their fault I'll come round with Guv's testicle crushers ;)
I haven't had any problems with the drives I've bought so far, they work wonderfully :)
a lot of new mother boards have the battery inside the bios chip. so you can't just change the battery, although mine does that too and my board is brand new. just the clock thing, it runs pretty fast.Quote:

leopardhunting, make sure you have all the programs, or the ones you want, not starting up when your computer boots up.
just run msconfig and goto the startup tab and uncheck from there, being careful not to uncheck the explorer and systray and you virus scan. uncheck one of the power profiles, and task monitor and scheduling agent, and any other software that is really bloatware.

There's probably a button cell battery clipped on (a shiny silvery circle). If you have a real cheap-ass motherboard, there might be a different type of battery soldered on.
Err... why are you snickering? It's perfectly feasible.
I think scoutt knows what a button cell battery (or whatever they're called) looks like.

My 'puter is brandnew. 3 months old. Cant remember the GB but there is more than I could ever need. It says I have 68% of system resources free. I wonder if it is the MS visual studio? I am going to try the msconfig thing.
I think it is just in a bad mood. I screw up everything electrical. When I'm pissed off I blow up lightbulbs. Maybe I'll just back away from it. Say a MOJO....Chant or Something.
yeah 68% is a little on the slow side. you should be around 80-90% when you start up.

and you know this for a fact. well I hate to prove you wrong but they did. it will be a little block box *snicker* and it will not look like a regular bios chip. I said they were doing this on some boards but I think they left that technology behind.
