64-Bit Architecture ?

Is Visual Basic.NET compiles codes to 64-Bit architecture ; I
mean : Is Visual Basic.NET is a 64-Bit Compiler ?

I really doubt it. Since you are compiling your programs to run on Win Me, Win XP, Win 2000, it leads me to believe it compiles 32 bit programs only. Microsoft isn't releasing a 64 bit operating system till after XP. Intel is still working on their 64 bit chip also. I am 99% sure that .Net is 32 bit, but hey, I've been wrong before. Anyone have anything to add?

I agree. Current CPU's are only 32-bit. It wouldn't make sense for there to be a 64-bit compiler at this time.

I just think about beyond the release date of Windows XP.
CPUs is used today are 32-Bit, but I think, including Intel, many of the CPU manifacturers (may be) has been invented the 64-Bit Platform and may be waiting for a strategic moment like the release date of Windows XP or beyond (our history teacher said :) ).

I think 64-Bit architecture will get much more importance after the release date of Windows XP 64-Bit Edition.

If Visual Studio.NET is currently compiles to 32-Bit, is there any possibility for Microsoft to make VS.NET complier 64-Bit, or a program`s features are what in beta release, will be the same in the final release except bug free?

I think Microsoft also wants their WinXP to be used with its full features including the support for 64-Bit Applications and programmers to use their Visual Studio for developing applications for WinXP, don`t they.

There will definately be 64-bit compilers after 64-bit CPUs begin to get manufactured. It might not be in VS.NET, but there will be a VS.NET 2 later. (and service packs...)

our 32 bit processors are 64 bit internally but that is not the full point i want to make intel is releasing the itanium line soon that is a true 64 bit processor and Win XP will be releaced with a 64 bit version it is all in the articles in the XP Beta area of MS's web site :D

I might just mention that 64bit processors have been around for years. 64bit versions of unix have been on the go for yonks.

EG. Compaq and DEC's Alpha processors.
Itanium has also been on the go for a little while, just not in general retail release.

There is already Windows for Itanium out in beta. MS hasn't been saying much because almost nobody would care.

Yes 64 bit processors have been around for years, but not in normal consumer's PC's. We still have a couple years...

Well the 64bit alpha processor has been banging around for years. You'd just wanna be a computer technician to know where to buy it, and/or how to build a system around it.
