I'm looking into it...what would you say is the best distribution?
Unix !!!!!!
The best one is:
"chegaMugha OS"
If you have to ask that question then its SuSE 7.1:DQuote:

Thanks for the tip!:D ;) :p
Yeah, I was thinking that I would like to try it, but then I realized that there are a bunch of different distibutions so I thought I'd ask people here which one(s) is good.
I like SuSE 7.2 a lot, but it has a bad time with my hardware(can only do 640x480, and when using the latest kernel, I can't use my aDSL connection)... Redhat 7.1 is also really good...
I have used RedHat and Mandrake, both are easy to load and run. I also heard that corel has a good one.

I heard Corel Linux really sucks......
That's certainly what Linux buffs tell us that their OS does for you. So far I must admit all that happens is that I can see a Penguin on the screen ("sure lots of people want that")Quote:

;) Just joking
And you've been getting Arnie past the guards at Edward's by saying "On no sergeant - this is a one quarter scale MX missile . . ." right??;)Quote:

Have you been spying on me Kzin????? ;)
 lol
Do the real MX Missles vibrate too?!?!?
When they have their engine reving they do!;)
You could probably get kovan to introduce you around the gay bars he hangs out at. Think you should keep to the computing though. But hey, if you want to swing your handbag with the other "girls" down "The Tool Shed" go right ahead. Most of us are fairly liberal in here, although that will not extend to threads about date waxing:rolleyes:Quote:

corel is great for installing (better than win98). But...in general i like red hat and mandrake
I'll stick to computing, thanks  :D
Come on, Wynd...where's your sense of adventure???;)Quote:

Give me adventure or give me a large kick up the bracket.
*gives Parksie a large kick up the bracket :D :D :D *
Anyway...I tried Mandrake 8. Nice OS but it crashed constantly, not the OS itself but the stuff inside it. interesting but something I can do without. Windows 2000 forever :)
I tried Mandrake 8 as well, and reformatted 2 days later. Just isn't enough stuff I want to use with it. I'll go back to 98 and the crashes I think.
Use Windows 2000 you fool!!Quote:

And Windows XP can burn in the deep dark pits of hell, it SUCKS!!!!
If you'd read any of my 2000 threads you'd hear that 2000 doesn't work on my PC - won't even install.
I had a few probs with W2K but I figured out how to work the probs out! it's a GREAT OS!
IM me and maybe I can help :)
IQRL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL during setup at the COM+ installation section?
Either way, right now I'm a little worse for drink so I'm not bothering to think :D
Windows 2000 rules..... but none of my peripherals work with it :(
Damn pieces of outdated crap.......
I love windows 2000 too...fortunatly, everything works with it for me:p

Now you know what you are going to spend your earnings on :) - Bill Gates approved hardware :D
Are there any without massive system requirements? Ex: Red Hat 7.1 needs like 4 gigs of hard drive space, and the newest version of Corel needs 64 megs of RAM (this all according to CNet). My computer isn't that great, 64 MB RAM is all I have :(
Ummm...Linux runs on a 386 with 2MB of memory ;)
X-Windows has massive requirements, but you can use it with a LOT less than 4GB.
the redhat I installed said it only needed 2 gig of HD space for a full install. I didn't install everything and it ran ok. and parksie is right, you can run linux on a 386 with 2mb ram. that is why it is so awesome. :D
what version of linux is that? i have not seen any? Are you talking about w/o a shell installed?
OK. The operating system is GNU/Linux - basically the GNU operating system with the Linux kernel underneath. The normal shell to use is bash (bourne-again shell). X-Windows is just a nicety that people who can't hack CLIs use :D
If you just install the basic packages you can really cut it down.
If I'm understanding correctly, it's like DOS is to Windows..
Ok, good
Red Hat 7.1
here read this
http://www.redhat.com/support/manual...TEPS-SPACEREQS
and FYI
Quote:
by RedHat A custom-class installation requires 300 MB for a minimal installation and at least 2.4 GB of free space if every package is selected
The KERNEL does, but the Window Managers (KDE, Gnome, etc.) suck (especially KDE :)) and slow down your system considerably,Quote:

That's why I mentioned X
Why does KDE suck? Most of the people I know that use Linux use KDE, I don't know why. From what I've seen it looks better than GNOME but then I'm not a Linux buff.
So what's the fundamental difference between the different distributions? Is the kernel the same? Are they all the same version of GNU/Linux underneath? Please explain :)
There's a lot of *nix stuff like shell scripts that I should really learn about for the job I just started, so I'm planning on getting a Linux partition set up on my home computer.
