/. and CNN are reporting that MS is changing its OEM agreement, allowing the configuration of the start menu and the uninstalling of IE!
I still think MS will try to get around this somehow, but we shall see.
'Course, as more and more games are ported to Linux, I'll have less and less reason to use Windows, but in the meantime, I'd like to have a choice in web browsers when I do. :)

I have a program that wipes IE off the face of your computer... I can't remember where I got it, or why(I like IE :o).. but if you'd like it, I can send it to you..
Does it work on W2K?
It would be a bad idea right now. It will be several more months before my fiancée feels comfortable on Linux. Right now she is still using IE on W2K. Eventually I will get her to Netscape or Opera on W2K and then to Linux.
I will also have to teach her how to use a mail handler on Linux. I'm used to Pine, but that isn't going to work for her. I have to find a nice GUI mail handler.
May I ask what the point of wiping out IE would be?
Netscape is only slower and even MORE sluggish, with LESS web developer support. Opera and Mozilla are pretty much devoid of all web developer support.
Oh well, rant over ;)
Netscape 6 is pretty bad. I don't like it. I like Navigator and Communicator better than IE 4, but IE 5 is better than Netscape.
But Opera doesn't have developer support? What do you mean?
I will say, Opera is wonderfully fast, a multi-page environment, much better full screen....
I have Opera installed, it's quite nice at times...but it just isn't something I'd use every day...Quote:

Even if it CAN support some features that IE can support, 95% of web developers don't know that, and therefore block any other browser except IE4+ from using the features...
It's like Mac, it's pretty nice, but not something I'd use every day.
(by the way, I halfcompleted an IE based multi page browser, i'll get it done sometime..better than NetCraptor also)
Well, you can set Opera to identify itself as IE.
But... if I sight builds itself to a particular browser only, especially to IE, and not to W3C/ECMA standards, then that site is...

Okay, so maybe that was over the top. Maybe they are just naive and don't realize that by catering to a browser and not a standard they are underminding the standard and helping to shift the balance of power toward greed and conter the progression of technology.
MS has never innovated anything in their life. Their goal is to string out users like drug addicts, feeding the addiction with cool new bells and whistles but no actual substance. And when the user has been so blinded by his addiction to a inferior product smaller companies who truely try and produce quality work will be forced out of the public conciousness.

Although I don't like Netscape, and IE seems like a better browser, I totally agree on the standards issue.
Yes, regretably right now Netscape and the Gecko engine is pretty bad (I feel sorry if the Mozilla project is using the Gecko engine). I feel that with Netscape's fold into TimeWarner/AOL, they have lost focus and their ability to move the technology forward. They don't seem to be helping JavaScript (no one else is grabbing onto their DIV idea, which is fine).
Netscape may be a better company than MS, in that they actually innovate (Mosaic and JavaScript) but right now, their browser is very bad. Use IE or Opera.
But don't write your pages toward IE or Netscape, write them toward the standards, and help force the browsers in line.
