Used to be cool

This forum used to be cool. I mean (an maybe it was just me), when I was starting out in vb I needed a lot of help. It seemed people were more than happy to oblidge (sp?). Anyways the minute you think you can help someone out, and someone jumps all over your ass because maybe you left out a piece of syntax, or perhaps your intentions were to just guide them into a direction so they can figure it out. There seems to be a mad rush to become a Guru, no matter who you step on. The problem is, that unfortunately programmers are by nature the most arrogant people on earth, I know I'm one of them.
Whenever my programmer friends and I get together it seems everyone wants to compare their skills to Gods. I retired at 35 from computer programming (last year) now I freelance. The main reason was I found it difficult to work in such a counter productive enviroment where everyone tries to put an "I" in Teamwork.
I find it weary to answer many questions because:
A) They have all been asked ten billion times before
B) When you answer sure as hell someone will look for a mistake and slam you.
C) They pretty much go unapreciated.

True, sometimes, definately true.

I've said it before, and no doubt i'll say it again...it's all down to this status grabbing...

That may be in the VB forums, but in the other language forums, its nothing like that.

So what if a question has been asked a hundred times before. If some one doesn't know how to do something they ask for help, isn't this the purpose of the threads.

Have noticed a tendancy for some people to go on the attack about code snippets. Just look at it as an opportunity for a forum fight. Point the guys in chit chat at the offending comment, and they will totally take care of it.

Yeah the status always seems to be the reason for the fights. Someone posts a "dummy" post in a thread pretending to give input, and other people start yelling he's cheating and everyone gets going in the fight trying to raise their post count.....it's actually quite stupid....since it won't help you at all in life :rolleyes: The answer is more important than the stupid number.

I hear you Bro. :p I feel your pain. From what i have seen it tends to happen in certain forums over others. I usually post in the Java
forum and ive had nothing but love in there. I think the problem has to do with age and programming language preference. Dont get me wrong i love Visual Basic but lets face it, most of the younger programmers start out with Visual Basic. So you see the correlation...........

Out of curiosity, an I considered as one of these people?

I correct people when I see bad suggestions, because I hate to see someone get mislead. If a bit of code is wrong (leaving out a piece of syntax can prevent the code from working, and if it goes uncorrected, the person asking the question is just gonna come back and complain that the code stinks), I correct that, too, because I think that's the right thing to do.

I do know I was too quick to correct two people, and I completely regret that...

But I don't think I "slam" people.

So do other people thing I "slam" them?

I checked a dictionary and it agreed with you. It even described a bible basher as "someone who forcefully or enthusiastically tries to make other people believe in Christianity".

That's weird. The dictionary also said that to bash can mean to criticise..

Yeah, it refers to people standing on street corners, shouting at complete strangers and banging on their copy of the bible as they are making a point!

This despite the fact that not one single person who has experienced this behaviour has subsequently converted to any other brand of religion. I mean, if it worked, you`d get people from shops shouting, at the top of their voices, " COME TO OUR SHOP....ITS GOOD...YOU CAN GET GOOD STUFF THERE....DO IT...YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO".

Tell me, how did those people get to the street corner to begin with? I suspect some other preacher was standing on a street corner on the other side of town banging his own copy of the bible and making points and convinced the guy to join and try it himself.
