Those convicted and jailed were separated from their children, certainly, but it was Trump's "zero tolerance" policy in which anyone caught crossing the border was automatically criminalised rather than being processed as a potential refugee that created the situation. There were alternative ways of interpreting the legal situation and Trump chose the absolute worst and most confrontational.
Bluntly, you can argue the technicalities as much as like. But Trump is currently using the threat of continuing to essentially orphan children in massive numbers as a bargaining chip to push through his immigration policies. Whether you agree with those policies or not, it's hard to argue that using that threat doesn't speak volumes about the man.
