Matrix-based game help

I'm a long time VB user, but I want to get into graphics. I want to make an online 2d matrix game. It is to be an adventure/combat game of people and tiles made out of icons (32x32). I have no clue where to begin.

There are lots of vb gaming sites! Just search for "VB Game Article" or something :p

There's also an excellent Lander game tutorial here at VB-World.net, it might help ;)

For starters, cut out the "online" part. Just go with the graphics for now. Then, when you are ready, start over, and code it for online play. It may sound like a pain, but this way, you wont hate yourself when you get in over your head (personally, i never want to try to program networking code =).

Hey Jack, if you like BitBlt, you might wanna try DX... ;)

DX sounds scary...

Take my word for it; DX is scary at the start ;)...
Absolute Power corrupts Absolutely... But of course is only available in a C++ flavour. If you are really serious in making a game you need C++ & DX.

But of course, that is why i program. I like to play god =).

It's easy if you use one of those "easy-to-use" wrapper modules :)

I need help doing TRANSPARENCIES in BitBlt.
Ive got my map complete but now I want to overlay objects to it that dont take up the full square. Each square is 16x16 pixels and the grid is 25x21 tiles. The map is 101x101 tiles (made it odd just to have a CENTER)

You won't just need winsock! You need a master file that computers automaticly download to get IP's and upload their own.. To do this you may want my FTP control!

Sorry Jack, I could tell you what happened the last 48 hours or so but you just wouldn't believe :p

Anyway, you'll need a MASK or you'll have to use TransBlt (it only works in Win98 so that's probably not a good choice). Look in the Lander game here at VB-World.net, it might help, or Fox's web site (there are lots of others but I can't remember ;) )

Jack, in the last, say, 3 months, there have been at least 10 questions about Transparencies with BitBlt. Search before you post.

If you guys couldnt tell Im new at graphics.

There are loads of mask creators, I'm sure you'll find one.

Anyway, what you have to do is have the transparent parts in the image BLACK and then make another image, the mask, where the transparent parts are WHITE and all the rest is BLACK.

Clear now? :)
