vb6 install in new Dell xps don't show File...Create exe menu
Hi to all,
I've a new Dell xps laptop that comes with Win10pro.
The vb6 IDE works.
You can load vbp project, do changes in modules and forms, even using activex and so on.
You can run F5, F8, debug, stop F8... run the program as usual.
But the File Menu don't show the opcion for create exe, it is Disabled.
Also the property window only shows the first tab.
I can change project without any limit, but then I need to save it, go to the old laptop and compile (create exe).

Do you have any idea about this behaviour?
Re: vb6 install in new Dell xps don't show File...Create exe menu
What version of VB6 is it (where did you get it) ?

Of course legal version, only with a lot of years!
Works fine in my old laptop, even I have the original cd.
The about shows
Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0
Version 8176 VBA: Retail 6.0.8169 Forms3: 16.0.7571.7095
Re: vb6 install in new Dell xps don't show File...Create exe menu
Looks to be the same as my Pro version (purchased when VB6 was first released).
Even though I have Win 7 Pro and W10 Pro, I have never installed VB6 into them (I reckon it is a better test environment for my VB6 programs, if the VB6 IDE was never installed). I keep my XP Pro PC for using the IDE
So it appears feedback from other members (who have installed inW10) would be best.
I have seen posts where people have installed in W10
Some thoughts -
- Did you install VB6 'Run as Administrator'
- Is it a 32bit vs 64bit problem. Where did you install VB6 to
PS Where is your project located (what is the path to the VBP File) ?
Re: vb6 install in new Dell xps don't show File...Create exe menu
Seems like you may need to reinstall VB
You should also install SP6
Mine shows
Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 (SP6)
Version 9782 VBA Retail 6.0.9782 Forms3: 12.0.6723.500
A bit confused as to why yours would say 16.0 on that last one when it does not have the SP installed
Re: vb6 install in new Dell xps don't show File...Create exe menu
I have deliberately stuck with SP5
This is what mine says -
Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 (SP5)
For 32-bit Windows Development Copyright © 1987-2000 Microsoft Corp.
Version 8988 VBA: Retail 6.0.8964 Forms3: 11.0.5601
Re: vb6 install in new Dell xps don't show File...Create exe menu
you've probably heard this a thousand times, but express edition of .net is free and makes .exe files. vb6 has a lot of issues with security. Have you tried running it in admin mode? If it can't read the save directory it will gray out the generate option. The earlier poster asked about what version because there was an "education" version released that came with books that did not have the ability to make exe files.

This is not the problem.
I hate the war vb6 / vb.Net.
Of course I know vb.net, I have installed and use vs2015, I own an legal license too of the Pro version, not the express one.
Since years ago I use vs2013,2015 for NEW programs, but what happen if you have several VERY BIG and complex (and important) vb6 projects?
Unfortunatelly MS have not any solution for really migrate vb6 to vbNet.
So please center in the topic.

The install of sp6 show this error without more info:

Dont get me wrong. Im not advocating vb.net over vb6. Vb.net is harder to use. But 6 is not designed for win 10. Your route with the least amount of headaches is install an xp virtual machine. Xp mose from vista may work in win 10. I dont remember for sure.

Yes I will try the route of WinXp or Win7.
btw what is "Xp mose from vista"? maybe you refers to "Xp MODE from vista", then even in Win10 you can install VirtualBox and an XP o Win7.

I've tried the install of sp4, sp5, sp6, none works.
but curiously in the folder there is an setupxxx.exe and other acmsetup.exe, executing the acmsetup several times seems to me that each time installs some files.
The same in the folder of vb6 itself, the other acmxxx.exe after several runs ......
now I have the create exe option in the file menu
There is now the about:

Re: vb6 install in new Dell xps don't show File...Create exe menu
Sounds like your install is not completing correctly.
There are known issues with installing VB6 on Win8 and Win10.
There are a few ways around this and a few threads here already that detail some of the issues and how to make it work.
The Service Packs will not install if main install did not complete correctly.

Sure, but at least I've now some changes:
Your about info:
Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 (SP6) Version 9782 VBA Retail 6.0.9782 Forms3: 12.0.6723.500
Mine:
only change the end part to this Forms3: 16.0.7571.7095
Now my about shows SP6. and ¡ show the create exe in menu !
The trick (if any) is reinstall using the acmesetup.exe several times.
both in the vb6 cd folder and in the sp6.
The install show errores but if you retry with some resets... There is some progress
I will continue testing next days, thanks a lot :thumb:
