Audio programming

Have been looking all around for information on how sound information can be sent to the sound card in real time. I know how to play wav's and other sound files using VB but what I really want to do is try and develop real time audio programs which information is manipulated such as frequency as it is sent to the output (ie a software synth program) I guess my real question is are their any commands or api funcions (maybe directsound) that can be used to send sound information to the sound card in some kind of a streaming format?


ANY information would be helpful including places where I might find more information on this subject.
