@home gives you a alpha numeric number
like cr837098-a
you put that as your computer name
then you use @home as workgroup
and set everything as "automatic"
and it should work
do this
and go to dos promt
and type "ipconfig"
then tell me what you get
i will see from there
oh ya, and email the stuff to me cus i hardly check here
hey, this is what I got:
Windows 2000 IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Media State . . . . . . . : Cable Disconnected
but i am positive that it is connected
~~~Dimava~~~
did you check if the ethernet card is detectect by win2k?
i never seen what you got
if i have my ethernet set to automatic and it CANNOT retrieve from @home
it just retrieves a dummy ip
steps:
1. make sure the ethernet is detected (right click my computer, system, hardware configurations, make sure your card is listed..
2. right click neighborhood.. go to properties, go to the first connection, right click, properties
then make sure the following are there
Client for microsoft networks
file and printer sharing for microsoft..
internet protocal (TCP/IP)
all should be showing with check marks
at the top of this list
there should be something saying "connect using.."
and your card name should be listed in the box...
3. highlight internet protocal, click protperies, then select "optain ip automatically"
and click "obtain server dns automatically"
make SURE your computer name is the name given to you by at HOME
still doesn't work
~~~Dimava~~~
after you do that
ipconfig again and see what it spitts out
same thing as before
~~~Dimava~~~
remove the network card
and reinstall it
then remove everythign from the connection properties and install only those mentioned above posts..
I don't know too much about Cable Modems, but I needed to download about 4 new drivers for my network & modem cards when I first upgraded to win2000. :rolleyes:
Something to do with the way win2000's built, a lot of hardware drivers needed to be re-written or updated to be picked up / work with win2000, just a suggestion, but have you got the very latest drivers for it ?
Okay, that's my 2 cents ...
yea, I already have the most recent driver, I'll try removing the card, and let you guys know what happens
DIMAVA - do you have SP1 for Win2K ?
i couldn't connect to net (@Home) after installing SP1 on Win2k... so i had to uninstall it and it works fine?! still don't know what might have caused it, anybody? i did check my settings and they all look the same as before SP1 installation.
regards,
yea, I have the latest serivce pack installed, but it didn't work before i installed it either. I'm let you know when I reinstall the card
~~~Dimava~~~
:eek: I didn't get any problems with SP1.
SP2's out as well at the moment ...
ok, I deleted everything that had to do with the network card, then took the card out, and dusted it, then put it back in. Now the comptuer recognizes the card wonderfully, and knows when the wire is connect,
the only problem is that @home still doesn't work with it
any ideas?
~~~Dimava~~~
ipconfig it until you get a ip
if that dont work
it wont work
ok, i am getting some luck
this is what it says now:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connecction-speecific DNS suffix . :
Autoconfiguration IP Address . . . : 169.254.140.206
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . .: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . .:
but i am 100% sure that my IP is 24.18.203.164
BTW: I have Service Pack 2 installed
thanx
~~~Dimava~~~
ok finally we are getting some local stuff
now lets change your computer name (ID)
to what ever @home gave you
should be cr(something)
then change the workgroup to @home
if you dont know where to put this stuff i can post some screenshots
after you have workgroup and computer name in there
leave ALL ip stuff (in the TCP/IP) to automatic
then reboot
this should give you internet connection
if it doesnt
ipconfig it again
see what you get
if you dotn get your real ip stuff
give me screenshots of your tcp/ip settings
plus computer name, plus work group
ok, i get the same fake IP, here is my screen:
This might be un-related, but I had a problem with my @home account where it wasn't connecting, but I could ping etc. I discovered there was an IRQ conflict with the Network card. I noticed it because the PC light on my modem was flashing off intermitetently (about every 6 seconds). The PC light should remain on solidly. Is that happening at all with yours?
SD
which modem do you have
terrion, or lancity?
do this
call @home
tell them to come and fix it
they will go through all the steps with ya
Thanks, but I sussed out pretty quickly that it was an IRQ conflict, re-configed the card and it worked fine. I just thought I'd mention it incase dimava's problem was the same.Quote:

Ok I dont get it. You say here that your IP should be 24.18.203.164 but in the .jpg you posted it shows you are setup for DCHP, which would mean that you would not have an IP # assigned to you, you would get a new one each time you log on.Quote:

If 24.18.203.164 is you IP then set it in your TCP/IP config, along with the net mask and default gateway.
Your default gateway is one of these four, most likely the last one
c1-pos7-0.cmdnnj1.home.net (24.7.69.34)
c1-pos2-0.nycmny1.home.net (24.7.65.230)
c1-pos1-0.nwhnct1.home.net (24.7.65.101)
c1-pos1-0.prvdri1.home.net (24.7.65.45)
bb1-pos1-1.provd1.ri.home.net (24.7.72.74)
i been using @home for 2.5 years
i have done about ummm 50+ installs within this time period
after all that i suggested that dont work
best is to call them
(they will first ping your MODEM) to see if its recieving info
which it looks like the modem is not sending or recieiving signals cus it would have picked up the proper ip information from their server
after they do that, they will tell you if tthere is a modem signal going in or out
if non, they will come over and fix it
if they see there is a signal in the modem and its working fine
they will set you up STATICALLY
which means they will manually have you enter all the ip information (you need buncha **** they will give you)
then if they cant solve it this way
the will send a techi over
problem solved
