[RESOLVED] Using reflection - get an individual item from a property that is an object array

I have a data set that is in a peculiar setup - an array of "column" classes with properties "Name", "DataType" and "Values"

The latter property is an array of values e.g.

I am currently turning this into a .NET collection thus:-

However the line object[] value = (object[])piValues.GetValue(thisColumn); is copying the whole array every time. How do I just get the value at index [i] ?

What exactly do you mean by "copying the whole array"? Do you just mean that you get a reference to the array because I wouldn't have thought that it would actually create a new array object and copy the elements of the existing one. An array is just a reference type object like any other so GetValue should simply provide you a reference to the object returned by the property getter, just like any other reference type property.

If you simply mean that it gives you the array when you just want one element from the array then you would treat it like any other array. You have to get the array object first before you can get an element from it. For instance, the Lines property of a TextBox returns a String array. You can't just get one line from that array. You have to get the array and then get an element from it. You can discard the rest of the array if you want but you still gotta get it.

Unlike TextBox.Lines though, your array isn't created on demand, so you're simply getting a reference to an object. It's no less efficient that doing the same for any other object.

True - this is more an aesthetic consideration than a performance issue...as it happens it is working well as is so I'll leave it well alone :-)
