The following chart Summarizes the overall results:

Re: Poll 3 Results: Are you a Maker or Maker Wanna-be?
Interesting that the comment "I dont want to play with toys" came through. If that person realized the totality of IoT and IoE, they would realize that this is the now. Its not toys and its not science fiction. I remember going to Disneyland in the 90s (I'm only 22, so that's a long time ago for me) and going on the "Innoventions" ride/thing. I remember seeing the robots and the kitchens of the future; thinking... that will never happen. We are now beyond what they had on display then, and they are showcasing even more technology, and it doesn't even blow my mind because of the rate at which technology is growing.
Desktop programming I'm sure will be around for years to come, but the now and future is getting into physical programming. Things that you interact with.
TL;DR
What are the possibilities of us getting a IoE forum? Something that encompasses all of those technologies? I don't imagine we would have a lot of traffic on that topic, but it would be nice to have a forum for discussion for it. I would love to use it to share projects that I have made, and if others are making projects, im sure they would love to share them.

Re: Poll 3 Results: Are you a Maker or Maker Wanna-be?
I'd be interested in that forum even though I may have been one of the few who were in the I Don't Care camp (I don't remember what I answered, but it was probably Other, if that was a category, because I HAVE done such things, just not with the platforms listed).
What I'd be interested in seeing is what other people have done, or are attempting to do, to see whether any of them inspire me. As noted in a different thread, I'm not seeing any home automation direction that I feel interested in pursuing...though I also realized that I technically already have lots of home automation devices, so perhaps I'm just at my personal saturation level.

Re: Poll 3 Results: Are you a Maker or Maker Wanna-be?
Ahh, there is much you are missing out on in home automation. Consider for example the modern essential: Singing Gondolier.
Be sure to check out the video, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it!

Re: Poll 3 Results: Are you a Maker or Maker Wanna-be?
I am missing out on that, to be sure. Unfortunately, I need the pool before I could have the use of such an essential.

Re: Poll 3 Results: Are you a Maker or Maker Wanna-be?
Surely you could use in the bathtub.

Re: Poll 3 Results: Are you a Maker or Maker Wanna-be?
Bathtub, sink, or any other porcelain plumbing fixture. It's a cleaner, right? Like a Roomba, but different.

Not sure if this qualifies as I'm not sure this could be done with Raspberry PI or the Ardruino but this is certainly inspirational:-

What are your thoughts on the possibility of a Maker forum?

I think it would make more sense on Codeguru, but I'm open to doing a Maker forum if someone would want to moderate it and driv the conversation.
I actually am looking for some people to write some Maker/IoT articles.... :)

I would be open to doing that.

What types of requirements would there be? How many articles per week/month. I am interested in Maker things and IoT (IoE ;) ) But I don't spend majority of my time working on hobby, I don't think I would be a good person for that. But if there were more details available maybe It would change my interest or someone else would find it interesting :)

Different in these ways:
1) It doesn't clean anything (you were mistaken about that part, it is only for entertainment).
2) It has a tendency to sink (reviews on Amazon were not kind).

Re: Poll 3 Results: Are you a Maker or Maker Wanna-be?
The open props on the quadcopters present the greatest impediment to turning that into something useful. There's no particular reason why the props couldn't be put into a housing of some sort that would protect the blades from collisions and protect other objects from the blades. At that point, there are some clear uses for such things...except that it all comes down to batteries. In all things, we need better batteries. I've come to believe that a significant breakthrough in batter technology would be a greater spur to technology than any other single advance.

They use a branch of math called Control Theory. Radical stuff to me.

Actually they could put the blades in a protective cage. I think it was mentioned in the video or I read it on Wikipedia, can't really remember where I came across it.

Shaggy... Perhaps Home automation isn't your thing... What about bluetooth tooth brushes?

If you are interested in writing on IoT/IoE, email me and let me know. I have a dozen article I'd like to get written around IoT/Maker

Re: Poll 3 Results: Are you a Maker or Maker Wanna-be?
If I recall, way back when, Bill Gates had 'automated' his home: people carried a sensor of some kind, and the rooms detected who was in the room and adjusted everything (?) to that person - like the car seat memories on modern, more upscale, cars.
Actually, automation hasn't changed in decades. Controls and control loops are exactly the same as they were. What HAS changed are sensors; bluetooth (wireless), gyros, strain gauges, etc. The sensor technology has become disposably cheap, and extremely small. This has brought the engineering out of the lab and industry into the garage.
Having said all that, the only really 'cool' home-automation I've seen in a while is using the iPhone to control the house temperature - I hate being cold and like a nice warm house. But the 'ye olde thermostat controller' seems to do the job just fine...and maybe my fridge telling me I'm out of milk (but then, what is to stop my fridge telling me to not drink so much milk, and maybe it should be 2% instead of full, and why are there no veggies, and that old chinese food is loaded with MSG and should not be eaten...anyone want to buy a slightly dented fridge? It only nags a little bit...)

Re: Poll 3 Results: Are you a Maker or Maker Wanna-be?
I just wanted to revisit the possibility of a maker forum. Perhaps the newly appointed FunkyDexter would be interested in moderating it?

Done. I did it here instead of Codeguru since you showed the issue. Now you need to help drive it!!! :)
Funky will figure out that he is a moderator on it soon enough!

Woo! Congrats Funky. Moving up in the world!

Re: Poll 3 Results: Are you a Maker or Maker Wanna-be?
Wait... What?! I think I voted "Say What?" on the pole. I know nothing about automation. Heck , I get nervous around lego technix!
Oh well, first act: ban DClamp from posting in that sub forum. Bwah ha ha! Bwah Ha Ha Ha Ha!

I can take you off as mod from that forum if you want. Totally up to you. ;)

Re: Poll 3 Results: Are you a Maker or Maker Wanna-be?
Nah, I can happily do some of the grunt work in it. I just may not be the best contributor:rolleyes:.
Also, it's another step forward in my plan of world domination.
edit>Just to be clear, the Internet of Things is something to do with the Cthulu Mythos, right?

World domination, one forum at a time. I like the way you think.
