Okay, I am at a loss here, can anyone explain this picture to me. It is made up from a number of coloured pieces. When in on order (the top on) as you can see (hopefully) there are no spaces. However, when all the pieces are rearranged there is one square left. I can't work out why though :(

The pieces won't fit together because the green rectangle only has a two unit protusion while the purple rectangle has a 3 unit protrusion.. :o

Ok, yes i can see that they don't fir together properly, did you happen to notice though, that the two triangles have exactly the same size peices in them, and the big triangles are the same size, yet the lower one has one square spare...
and the image still won't sodding show...
Yes, I did notice they have the exact same size and amount of pieces... I've been confused by this before, but I found there are some things you just don't question... like Harry's sexuality.... he gets really pissed about that ;)
Ummm.... Now, should i stick up for Harry, seeming as he is my best mate, or should i join in and take the piss. Now, if i was Harry, what would i do?

The shape they make in either arrangement isn't a triangle. If you look at the gradients of the red and green triangle pieces, you'll see they're different - blue gradient is 2/5, red gradient is 3/8.
There's a very thick outline on the image so you can't see the distortion, making it look triangular.

Okay, that's no fair, they didn't give you a triangle to start with. I thought that was one of the postulates and thus assumed the slopes were the same on the two peices. Very muchly so not fair. :)
