I haven't read it - what did it say?

(c) 2001 Micro Mart...copied without permission :p
Yep, I would agree that the letter was ever so slightly too harsh!
I think that tom bloke has a bit of an attitude problem, he could also use a bit of tackt (i know thats spelt incorrectly).
Do you have the origanal letter by karl (or is it an article on this site or somethink that that bloke was moaning about?)?
No, I don't have the original, sorry :(
I'll have to ask Karl if he's got a copy somewhere.
Well !
Well !
Well !
I would have to agree that Mac's are pretty ****e in some areas. I remember using one in Year 6 and oh ****e what a big loada crap it was. Sloooooooooow, pants and generally naff.
I hate the mouse that u get with the Mac, i mean, for Delta Force 3 how could u shoot and use the scope without the dear right click. And SCROLL WHEEL, i would die of finger exaustion without one !
My m8 who has one is a git as well, he reckons that his G4 400 mHz or what ever whips the ass of a 1,000 mHz AMD, maybe but AMD guys are just the cream of devon sheep :D
Though Macs have come a long way :D
 Does that tom dude have a problem - that guy needs a extra-large dose of Drainex.
If I could say something to Tom, it'd be:
" Well, if the Mac is soooo cool, why don't we have it on every desktop?"
But anyways, that guy had many more alternatives to the language and style of the letter (for example the Oxford Dictionary, for one). But, I think we shouldn't argue with losers
(Forget searching Micromart.co.uk for the article - it ain't there)
That Tom guy is a physco. Karl is our head geek!! Anything he doesn't know isn't worth knowing. Muchos respectos Karlos (even though he never did respond to that mail i sent...grrrrrr)
I like Karl Moore's code, helps out a lot.
And that guy shouldn't get an attitude, what the hell is he using a mac for? MACS SUCK!!!
Don't let him get to you Karl, your the best, your articles are great, your not all that boring, explain a lot in detail, make things easy, so don't let him get you down Karl, that's jus' some lame dude that thinks Macs are cool :o.
All in favor of Karl Moore, let's hear it ' HIP HIP HOORAY!'
Cheez, where'd we all be without this VB.Saint?
I haven't read the original but I got my hands on what I think was one of the first iMac s when it came into the country and observed a number of experienced users (mac users mainly) holding the round mouse at various "non-orthogonal" :( angles getting an interesting control effect  and suggesting that Apple hadn't tested the thing properly with normal (mac) users. As for using it properly - I still maintain that a Mac should be as easy to use as any domestic appliance - (I think someone on this forum suggested that they thought that they could not use a dishwasher - but I seriously doubt if they would get a fatal system crash in normal use) - so if it fails because someones web site is too hoopy that just seems a bit sad.Quote:

Tentative Conclusion - Mac monotheism (not just ownership - that's fine (if you like that sort of thing)) is some sort of cult religion - do not get involved - do not criticize - just move on quietly - try not to attract their attention and thank Turing that that meme is not in your head too.
That was way too harsh on him, they don't obviously know him like we do, Don't worry Karl we still like you :)
We love you man; Although I doubt he wastes his time in this forum.
According to my source (Karl Moore himself:D) Karl is home, sick - he caught a cold and well, hasn't been online for almost more than a week.
Get well soon, Karl.
Tom Schmidt must die
Don't confuse this guy with all Apple users.
Hey Get Well Karl, and answer my emails you lazy b****d.
Does Karl ever come on these forums if so as whom?
I agree his articles kick ass, helped me heaps.
Tom Schmidt is a absolute ****** must be a pom i reckon!
Just kidding you crazy brits!
I agree Jethro!
I've seen him online on this forum about twice or thrice only. Karl's like working on multiple projects for multiple companies while running his own company, and between this doodling an article or replying to someone's e-mail, so I guess he might find himself short on time
Sometimes, I think programmer's should get a 48hour day. :D

I could have done without the photo of Karl.

What are you working half days then
Yeah has to be a pom!
Of Course it was. But then again, I like Karl. And I think Apple sucks. It's like linux...you always need an excuse for why you use it.
Generally because some idiot is berating you with why you ain't using Wintel.Quote:

G4 and linux rocks:)
Well the tutorials Karl does are blinding (no disrespect to all the other editors here)!!!
Critism isn't neccessarily bad, and is sometimes helpful to better yourself. Having said that, THE GUYS USING A MAC !!!! What the hell is wrong with him ?!?! The best thing we can do for this guy is get the men in white coats!
:Important:
The detective in me just caught the website of the
Mac Maniac - Tom Schmidt , Minneapolis
He is a Shareware Font developer for the mac..
See more of his mad mad mad mac talk here
This guy Works for http://www.firsttech.com/Quote:

Yeah, but I recovered a 700K ZIP file from a fried DOS disk that neither PCs or Macs would read on a 286 laptop running Norton Utils 2. Open up disk editor, save contents to disk and *ping* one disk image...truncate it to the zip file and load into winzip :)
Nice work, though, Active! Impressive skills...maybe we should arrange a custom status for you :)
I'll have to let Karl know about this -- I'm sure he'd appreciate it (naturally I will point it all at your skills :)).
He he he... :D Thanks ! :)
Hey there Gang!
Well, I've just stumbled across this post - and suddenly want to give all you great folk a big hug! :p
Thanks for being so astute and actually connecting Micro Mart to lil' old me back here at VB-World. The support is much appreciated.
Head honcho at the magazine, Simon Brew dropped me a line the other week to actually run this letter by me. He was happy my 'controversial' articles were raising such a response.
I didn't mind either - though must admit, that Tom bloke did seem a bit "off the wall".
The ironic thing was the article actually praised Macs for their 'style'. After all, they don't have much else goin' for 'em... :D (I'm attaching a copy for your reference)
Anyway, you guys rule - thanks once again for your support. Seriously - I'm touched.
In a non-sexual kinda way, course ;)
Ciao for now!
- - - Karlos
ps. my VB-World e-mail has been down for the past few weeks (password probs), plus I've been ill (well noted Dax!) - hence the lack of replies. Sorry! :)
<Karl scratches head and thinks of next excuse>
I'm touched too. Cheers Karlos. Looking forward to your next newsletter...;)Quote:

I swear tom looks like that guy out of Wonder Years but grown up.
But now you know what he looks like you can say that yes he is a dickhead and yes his wife is ugly and not worth responding too!
Hey,
Karl Moore is the main man. He knows who I am. I read the article before it was published and agreed with everything he said about Macs.
Anyway, you couldn't know a nicer chap, and for someone like me who doesn't know much about programing, even I can understand what he's going on about. That's only because he speaks in plain and pure English. None of this jargon business.
Hey Karl, keep up the good work..You've got a big following as I keep telling you, and remember, tell it how it is. It's NOT you!
Mark
Just heard from Karl himself that the editor of Micro Mart has been notified of this thread ;) First by our good man Dax, and then by Karl to add weight to the recommendation :D
Well...VB-World is about to be in the public eye...let's try and look good! :p

....It was to harsh......there that explains it all!
Well, boo hoo.
Goodness me, what's up Tom's a*se? Actually on second thoughts judging by his article, I'd rather not know.
Mac's vs IBM, well, I must admit I never liked Mac's either, in fact I s'pose you could say I'd preffer to use a Commodore 64 as opposed to using a Mac.
But that too, is beside the point. It would seem that the Apple CEO, really screwed up with the first truckload of iMac's. See it has always been Apple's main goal to have the latest & greatest machine's. However, due to the fact that the iMac's didn't have overly massive Hardware markups, they had to be a lot more "fancy". Hence the peculiar mouse.
However, even though I really could trash Apples for a much longer time, I won't. Mainly because it was Steven from Apple who picked up the idea (from Xerox) of the first Mouse (or hand manipulated pointing devide) It was also Steve that created the idea of a GUI such as Windows. (That's why you sometimes see people wearing T-Shirts saying "Windows 95 - what Apple has been doing since 1984")
And indeed it was also Apple who started mass producing cheap (affordable) computers which could be purchased by the everyday Joe sixpack with a bit of money.
So although I'd love to really rip the living s**t through Apple Computers, the truth is it'd be very unfair, as it is they who were the competition so fierce that they helped produce what we have now.
Everyone seems to conveniently "forget" the Acorn machines, just because they only made it in Britain
I still prefer many aspects of them to PCs or Macs.
THe Mac vs PC debate has been raging for longer than I've been a self pronounced computer geek, and it will never die. PC users have their system that they accustomed to and they like it. Mac users have their and they like it, well most of them. I know some die hard Mac fans that would rather stick a cherry bomb up thei patootie and light it than to have to sit down and use Windows, but hey it's personal preference.
While I agree the response was pretty harsh and threw a couple of low blows in to emphasise the point, I think it's a pretty senseative issue that should treaded upon carefully lest you want to exile a legion of loyal Apple fans.
I think this image will say it all:
http://www.c-spine.com/images/macvspc.gif
I read the article that this tom schmidt wrote and I only have one comment:
"Me thinks he doth protests too much..." :p
This one cracks me up. If Mac's had been cheap and affordable they would now dominate the market. They were so paranoid about anyone making any clones that they stamped them out with huge legal teams. If they hadn't done that they would be sitting on top of the pile instead of Microsoft.Quote:

As for them inventing the GUI. Xerox had a GUI system to go with the mouse. Many other companies designed GUI's at the same time Acorn Archemedies, Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, Apollo/HP, Digital, Sirius/ACT. The idea that all GUI advanaces came from Apple is farcical.
In many ways the Amiga and Acorn operating systems surpassed many of the much later Apple and Microsoft O/S's. But again never conquered the world as you had to use their specific hardware. In a strange way Microsoft was the first cross platform o/s with it's open hardware standard.

OK, you may have a point about Mac's not being the first to introduce that GUI. However that is not what I was trying to say. What I was trying to say was that Steve (CEO @ Apple) was the first to take the concept of a Mouse used in a GUI environment to the masses. And yes, Although it was Xerox's idea, they were actually about to toss it out and try something else.
Fair point! Sorry, didn't mean to sound grouchy:) I sjuspect I was suffering from a hang-over:D
