What are you all doing?

It suddenly occured to me that we are all here on this bulletin board solving each others niggles and problems and being generally nice guys/gals to each other :) but we don't really know what each other is really doing - we don't know the bigger picture.

I thought it might be quite interesting to know what kind of applications are being developed in VB - not only would it serve to show non-believers just what is achievable in VB but I think it would be interesting just to know. Maybe I'm the only one with this opinion. Who knows!

Myself, I'm currently writing a system to store Customer Loans information - this backs onto a SQL Server and links to Crystal Reports for printing facilities. It makes extensive use of the Apex TrueDBGrid (and people who know me would expect that!) and has to be user-friendly, quick and powerful.
I am re-writing the front end to replace a less-impressive front-end written by someone who has now left the company, and I am generally impressing whoever sees it (not to show off too much! ;) )

So, what are you all doing?

At the momnet I am reading a VB forum! ;)

Actually, I'm writing a Web-based maintenance inteface to maintain a set of data files on a UNIX System.

I wrote a prototype using vb objects embeded in Active Server Pages. That worked fine but BMW's 'Blue-Print' states that all web based apps have to run on Netscape Enterprise Server.

Luckily it can still be on an NT server box!


so I am in the process of converting the ASPs to server-side javascript.

It is not possible to embed VB objects into Server-side scripts so a service (written in VB of course!) will be running on the server an periodically checking the database for changes and then doing the stuff the embeded objects were doing before.

Well, I develop a system for an Operahouse in Sweden. Its my first project as a Software Developer.
It will control the hatches in the floor on stage, and the UI will control whitch hatches that the user wanna Open or Close thru a "Pointing screen?"(user click on the screen, no mouse or keyboard). The system communicates with a PLC-program thru the com-port.
I will be deliverd in August so the pressure is building for every day ;)

I'm writing/maintaining an app which makes it possible for clients to order stuff from their suppliers

It lets them request stock/prices/etc.
The client program is universal, and the different server programs work with different databases; AS/400, Oracle, SQL Server, Access, etc, I'm also writing a web interface for this.

And I'm working on creating a program which works with WAP(Wireless Application Protocol) for use on cell phones and other mobile devices.

Also some different update programs.

I'm working on a financial package (MSDE/SQL server as backend), a custom made search/maintenance technical car info program (SQL Server), and creating some maintenance screens in asp (SQL Server as backend). Hehe not at the same time though... I can multitask as good as DOS can :-)

Am I the only one here who is just a hobby programmer doing/learning this stuff for fun! I code a little in VBA at work but that's about it.

I just wrote a neat little utility for tracking stock prices on an online movie stockmarket game I play (www.hsx.com), which I'm rahter proud of. It was my first non-"hello world" type program.

And thanks to the guy who helped me out with the flashing toolbar thing. I can't find my old message so I couldn't send an email!

Next project will be rewritting a little puzzle game I wrote years ago in QBasic. I'm going to use it to try and teach myself Direct X stuff.

And I'm doing a happy dance because yesterday I found out that they have a site license ofr Visual Studio 6 where I work so I don't have to buy it.

I'm working on an Automated Test System for Routers. Alot of the project uses in-house applications and Rational Robot scripts.

I write code that interfaces with "Security" software and stores info into various different DBs for administration, testing, and reporting.

Ash: No, you're not alone, I'm a happy amateur as well.
I'm currently reading windows programming with VB in school, and as exam I'm making an encryption program. The goal is tha have a small text-editing program, like NotePad och EditPad, but with a function for encrypting and decrypting the text.
I guess you'll hear more from me, I need quite a lot of help...

Just recently graduated and this is my first programming job in VB. I havent really had all that much experience with it, but I do see what VB can do, and I am happy to be using it. Been playing around with API's as you may see in some of my questions.

Current project is an instructional software package, with media. Your basic Computer Based Training package.

Well,

My first project was to rewrite an app that basically calls up batch files that run Oracle SQL routines. Pretty basic.

I just rewrote some spreadsheets from Lotus 123 to Excel using VBA for importing info from comma delimited files, (pretty slick; still grinning everytime I use it :D :D). They also write out space delimited files for use with Oracle 8.

Right now, I'm working on a small project tracking app for inhouse use.

I'm pretty much a hobby programmer at home. I'm working on a time tracking program to compile time each month spent in activities and can add users, delete users and the like.

I love programming and hope to do it someday professionally.

Well, I'm working on an Enterprise application (databases: Sybase 11.0 and SQL Server 7.0). Application consist of 2 parts: Windows Client and Web Client (using VB, ASP, IIS and Vantive).

Also, I'm working on a private contract to create a middle tier COM object using VB and XML.

I'm working on a manufacturing system which collects production data. It has a MS SQL server back end and also interfaces to a manufacturing planning application. It runs 24 X 7, 363 days a year. Its been running for nearly 2 years with very few problems.

Who says you can't write mission critical systems in VB. :D

Well, I landed my first programming job about 5 months ago, and didn't know a damned thing about VB. But I've learned a lot since then.

I've been working on a project which, when finished will be a program to print invoices, keep track of inventory, manage work orders, and keep track of customers and employees.

It has Sybase SQL 11 on the backside, and I also was working on a web interface using CGI/PERL, but I had a lot of problems with it, so I put it on the back burner for now.

I got my job 5 months ago, too. I started off doing alot of excel and powerpoint work...and slowly migrating my experience into VB. I am taking a VB and C++ class now. I need it :). Between work and clases, I don't have much of a life. Later, I need to veggie my brain.

Seriously, I use this all the time now, and it is especially useful when you have a routine for getting on the net. I have it set up to start up Slashdot, VB-World, NY Times, etc... when I push go.

I'm currently working on something for the science fair that uses lasers and sound and stuff. It's neat.

Currently: Report app connecting to Informix database. Creates tables for speedier reporting. Reports can be added with just a change to the INI file. Boring, easy, etc...

I'm working on fixing a VB3 app at the moment, an unbelievably tedious task. It may be easier to rewrite it to VB6 - the db's it uses are Approach .dbf's and it's UI was designed by Picasso! :rolleyes:

I mainly do inhouse stuff that automates manual crap (you know the score 4 PC's = 20 humans - and they never go wrong . . .)I got into this via Access and then just moved on from there.

I'm working on a NTier Project with Sql Server and Microsoft Transaction Server.

Bunch of Active X Dlls, couple of them interact with SQl Server, One of them encapsulates business rules(store procs are not doing that)

First Phase would be able to use for IIs and Web Development,
Second Phase would be able to use the same Architecture to create a Win32 trough RDS and
DCOM ....lots of stuff to learn

Well right now I am working on an rpg much like the old "Bard's Tale" only with more caracter interaction. It is more of a combination b/w "The Bard's Tale" and AD+D. The great thing I hope to do with it though is allow the gamer to create most of the game and then interchange them. So really all I need to do is the layout, design windows, and the nessecary tasks off displaying pictures and figuring position and calculating stats.

I am currently trying to develop in VB a program to dynamicaly map the human DNA chain. Performance has been an issue. =)
