I was just wondering how many Mac users/pro-Mac people there are out there. I thought that this subject might spark some debate in this forum.

Could you put in a box "they are OK if you like that sort of thing" ;)

macs were the very first computers that I used, so I still like them. I don't own one, but they are still good machines :)
"G4 kicks PC asses".
Absolutely love G4s, and Macs are pretty cool as well. Of course all these PC junkies will thumped their little scrawny chests and claim PCs are better....but....consider the G4 needed special US approval to be exported.
So fine go back to your Bill Gates posters, and your blowup rubber Window boxes.
Actually also like PCs and Windows. The whole question of which is better is comparing apples to oranges don't ya think.
I say it comes down to this...
Go to a computer store.
Look in the software section for MAC then PC...
Which is better? which is Bigger?
Now look at the Hard ware.. Same thing..
PC is like 12 to 1!
Mac is an excellent machine but pc is more common..cheaper..etc.
I say PC
Well it all depends really.
PCs have got more software (and hardware too I guess) but Windows pretty much sux.
Mac's CPUs are faster and more efficient than a PCs. The software for the Mac isn't bull***** either, PCs have all this crap as software created by programmers who only create on program. And almost all PC software is the same thing!
I don't really care which machine I end up using, provided it is fast, and does the job.
I am using a PC now, that's only because I can't afford a Mac, but to be honest, even if I could afford it, I'd still be using a PC. I prefer a two button mouse.

Ok more importantly who are you supporting in the Super 12 and why?
I personally think this: Macs are good if you into heavy graphical stuff, like arcitechture or doing stuff for TV or whatever (so is BeOS), but for general use, games playing and programming, PCs kick the asses of all those Macs out there. I mean, does anyone here know anyone who actually programmes specifically for Macs? I once went to a mates house, who has a Mac. The best game he had was... wait for it... Atomic Bomberman. PCs have games almost as good as those run on many consoles (I'm not saying that the experiance is any better, some games are much better suited to consoles). Sure a G4 may be faster thatn Billy Whizz on steroids, but what can you do with it that's actually FUN?
Mac has always been a desktop publishing environment, and is better than a PC for graphics.
But better than Mac is SGI! But ofcourse, it is money.
same thingQuote:

I agree there. I wish I could afford an SGI box for my 3d stuff
I have a horrible confession. Amongst my assorted computers I have a mac. I hardly ever use it. It's a good businness computer word processing etc. but it's difficult to justify buying one as the rest of the world is using p.c. hardware.
Mac had it's chance and blew it. The only people I see still using macs are the graphic artists who wouldn't know one computer from another and people who spell microsoft as micro$oft thinking they're making a statement. (I'm not getting at any one with that comment, it's just that I've worked with a number of mac people (hence the one in my collection) and I find their hatred of microsoft to be most amusing. I'm sorry, but not making a profit is not being rebellious, it's being plain daft, and Apple have shot themselves in the feet so many times that they always amaze me when they reload and do it again.;)
Just my couple of pennies worth,

Cander: We are talking about Apple Macs. Do you own a gay?
(I bet he does)0oo..(;^D)
I prefer PCs! Here are my reasons:
1) My cousin has a Mac. I tried it, couldn't get the hang of the mouse. I don't really like the File/Edit/View menus on the top of the Mac GUI. I'm not used to the HDD folders "root", "user" and such.
2) PC's are more common, and are cheaper(from what I hear). I own a PC.
3) There is more software packages and utilities for the PC.
4) I just plain like PCs better. My school had PCs, not Macs. I built a PC, and I am familiar with all it's workings.
The above message is to CyberTHUG not Cander, sorry.
No, it was to Cander. He is the one who said Macs and Gays are the same thing.
I was asking if we were talking about Macs or Gays because someone said, "if you like that sort of thing."
And I don't completely hate Macs. I feel that they were a great idea, just had a fatal flaw.
I like Gays just fine, they will flatter me.
Not really. You can compare a Mac to a PC (and an apple to an orange). That's what everyone in this thread is doing. If you say Macs suck, you are wrong, because if they did suck, no one would buy them, and Apple never would've continued making them, and if you say PCs suck, you are sort of on the right track. It's not the PC which sux (most probably) it is the software which allows you to use the hardware (ie and OS).Quote:

Apple should have licenced the OS when they made it (before it became MacOS)...
I have nothing intrinsically against Macs, it's just that they're far too "idiot-proof" to be of any use. You can't change file types, use a "real" command line (I know about the command line you get when it REALLY crashes :p). One thing in their favour -- I love the networking...so easy to use!
Mmm, I'm sitting at my desk. My p.c. is on (and I'm using it), my mac is off (and has a layer of dust on it).Quote:

Go figure:)

True, I'd rather be using a PC than a Mac. To be honest I don't even know where my Mac is. If you prefer PC, then you prefer PCs. Don't use your Mac if you don't like it.
Well, it looks like no-one who owns a Mac loves it.

Its blatently obvoius that pc's were going to win this debate on this forum coz its on a vb site and vb can only be on a windows pc (sort of defeates one of the main points of usung a very high level languages when they wont cross platform it). But in a way, i think its like saying whats better, trucks or cars? Well neither is the answer, trucks r good when you want to transport lots of goods, and cards are good for transporting people. And its the same thing, macs are good for newbies and people doing dtp, graphics or vidio editing. PC's are good for office work, gaming and surfing.
They have Real Basic on Mac's don't they? "Similar not same" stuff.
i know sweet fa about mac programming so i wouldt know. But even if they do have some very similar equivelent, they dont have the same dll's and vb programs generally have more api calls then anything else, and i doubt ms have realesed the source for the windows dll's (although if they did, they could probably be converted quite easily as they r written in c++).
C, actually. Very little of Windows uses C++. Check out WINE though ;)
i thought wine was an emulator for linux (emulate windows in linux i mean)?
It is, but DAMN it's useful for programming in Windows.

From what i hear, MacOS is 10 times more stable than windows (not hard). And as for not having a disk drive, i think that is the best idea since sliced bread :D
Floppy discs are so old and rubbish now, the only reason new computer come with them is coz old computer come with them. Its about time for something like zip discs to step up and take floppy discs place. But, if you wish to own a mac and oppose the revelution, you can buy fdd's seperatly and install them.
The reason we use floppies is because they're ubiquitous, and the drives are only £10 a pop :)
Unfortunately, to attach a floppy drive to an iMac costs nearly £100  Daylight robbery  Anyway, until zip disks become cheaper, people aren't going to use them to the same extent.
The thing with floppies is, you can put it on a PC-formatted floppy and ANYONE can read it on any machine :) (except an iMac  )
And presumably Apple were not expecting iMac users to produce anything that anyone would want to save for posterity or transfer to another computer anyway ;)Quote:

r u lot sure thees a mac version of vb coz i have searched dabs for visual basic and real basic and there was no mac stuff. Is it an old discontginued one that was compatible with vb v3 or something?
Lord
I am usin WinNT 4.0 and find it quite stable...
I have yet to completely freeze or crash it..it can usually
recover from any errors.
on the other hand I have heard MacOS (except for the new one OSX??) has gone down hill in stability..even hearing the statement "Worse than windows"
I read an article just today about Windows XP (out this summer). It said it was 30% more stable than NT in the Beta version, but then, do we believe it, it is Microsoft after all.
well i dont use nt. But i have used 3.1,95,98 and they are all quite unstable. I found win95 more stable that 98 but it refused to let me install 95 :( just gave me some weird fatal error on the install.
But im using 98 atm and i get at least 2 restart crashes a day on average and i generally have to reformat every 4-5 months coz windows just get very messed up. Theres a program i watch quite a bit where people write in with problems that have with there computers and 98%ish of them are problems on a windows computer and the majority of those are windows going wrong, or not doing its job right.
hmm, do we believe it as its MS. Well let me put it this way,Quote:

I read an article just today about a flock of flying pigs that will be visiting my town tomorrow. I cant wait.
On the other hand, i supposed it will have to be relitivly stable seen as tho its aimed at servers as much as home users?
well on the defense of crapyness (is that a word?)
Windows XP beta took down the entire network 3 times at my work (Very Large Company) and people were warned NOT TO INSTALL!!! or fines will be imposed!!
!! ZOINKS!!
I have 98 at home and NT at work...
98 is not bad..I get about a crash a week...(reboot crash that is)
and of course there are mostly windows questions and problems...windows outnumbers all other OS like 50 to 1!! (yes I pulled that number out of my ***) but its a big ratio difference (just look at bill bank account....and look for a new PC (not mac) with a different os on it!..hard to find!)
No problems, grab any brand named PC down your local shop and ask for the Linux installed version. Just did this on saturday for a new server.Quote:
