I have a SonyEricsson X10 (not the mini) and it works beautifully. The 4" screen is absolutely amazing for watching media. After installing the "arcMedia" application, I can watch just about any format imaginable. (AVI, WMV, MKV, MPG, etc...) I don't know the price of it though... All I could find was a used one for $499.
Might be worth looking into?

zune. they wont play mkv files but i dont think many, if any, will. there are converters out there so you might be stuck doing that.

iPod Touch 4G. Classiest media device to come out in a long time, IMHO.

Yeah, anything Apple isn't going to play MKV or much of anything, so you'll be doing some serious converting there.

Maybe a PSP. I've got some friends that use those for movies/tv/games.

The iPod Touch does not support MKV files out of the box. Neither does the PSP, but you can hack it to do such functionality (Google it).
There is a list on Wikipedia that shows all hardware devices compatible out of the box with the MKV file format. The one that interested me was the Nokia N8. Some people here may advise against this phone because it runs Symbian, but if you can tolerate the Symbian device and really desperately want to watch MKV files on the go, the N8 is the best choice in your position.
With that said, if you already have an Android device, you may be interested in an app called "Rock Player". That can play MKV files, as well as AVI and DIVX files. If you don't have an Android device and want one for this software, make sure that your phone is supported. Android OSes lower than 2.1 are not supported.
