Google's giving out chrome notebooks
to folks in the US.
You have to qualify by filling in a survey, but if you're interested, here's the link.

Easy to sue people who misuse the notebook, I suppose. :p
Like nothing's stopping you from overwriting the operating system with another one, is there?

Re: Google's giving out chrome notebooks
Yes and you can't get to the survey using IE8. Says you need a modern browser like Chrome.
Re: Google's giving out chrome notebooks
That's just crap. Like a lot of apple services requiring you to access through Safari. Everyone's pushing their own junk on you.
Re: Google's giving out chrome notebooks
Regarding the installation of your own OS... it would certainly be within Google's deviousness bracket to install a firmware hack (pre bootloader) that scans the partition table of the HDD and refuse to boot if it detects something other than Chrome OS on there.
Circumventing such a thing would take more ingenuity than the average netbook user would possess. However it is (as you implied) unlikely that such a provision would be present on the netbooks.
Who knows though?

One way to find out, hopefully they pick me as one of the people to send a laptop too...
Re: Google's giving out chrome notebooks
Just FYI, rings a cautious bell
I didn't take the 'quiz'. Beware and ensure the page you go to to provide personal info is secure and a valid URL. Been a rash of hacks/viruses on facebook that follow similar a scenario.... Take quiz, ask for personal info, personal info used for spamming or worse

*Tinfoil hat on* They could do that...*tinfoil hat off*
Or they could just use a bit of Javascript to find the OS from the browser's userstring, and reject it if it does not match Chromium OS's userstring...
Re: Google's giving out chrome notebooks
Right, for some reason, I assumed wossname was talking about downloading Google Chrome OS, not actually installing it. My bad.
Won't happen again wossname. xoxoxo
Re: Google's giving out chrome notebooks
US only and age limits. That's discriminatory. :(
Re: Google's giving out chrome notebooks
Why are age limits discriminatory?
Re: Google's giving out chrome notebooks
Because it separates people into different categories without a really concrete reason.
Re: Google's giving out chrome notebooks
No concrete reasons? Would you prefer to have your products tested by kids? Other than common sense reasons, I'm sure there's a bundle of legal ones too.

You should see Google Chrome Web Store. Essentially it is a glorified place to get glorified bookmarks. Only now you can buy some of these bookmarks/services directly.
Seriously, what happened to just using Google for alternatives?... Oh wait...
Re: Google's giving out chrome notebooks
i'm starting to wonder.. soon "websites" wont exist, its all gonna be "apps" lol..
Re: Google's giving out chrome notebooks
Could you buy a couple keep one and sell the rest on E-Bay for us people who don't live in the US?
Re: Google's giving out chrome notebooks
Re: Google's giving out chrome notebooks
