[RESOLVED] WinXP Remote Desktop Connection Crashes
Hi guys,
One of the users in my company using a laptop (winXP Pro SP3) to RDP to a win 2003 terminal server. The RDP program crashes instantly upon making the connection. If I sign on to the laptop using a different account, I was able to RDP to the terminal server without any problem but it will crash when I sign in as him. I've already cleared the cache under %userprofile%\application data\local\microsoft\terminal server client\cache but that didn't help.
The next thing I'd try is to delete his profile and recreate it but that would take some time to back up and restore his data. So before I do that, I think that I should ask you guys and hopefully some one can hint me with a better solution.
Thanks for reading,
Stanav.
Re: WinXP Remote Desktop Connection Crashes
Try this
In the win 2003 terminal server, reset password for the user. Then use the gpupdate command from CMD.
If this doesn't work then issue gpupdate command from CMD in the laptop as well...
See if this helps...
Re: WinXP Remote Desktop Connection Crashes
Hi Koolsid, I'm not sure If it's the issue is with the group policy on either the server or the laptop, since I was able to make the RDP connection from the laptop to the terminal server when I sign on the laptop with a different account AND do the RDP using his account. RDP carshes only when I sign on the laptop using his account (doesn't matter which account I use for RDP session, it always crashes when the current logged on user on the laptop is him). This tells me that it has something to do with his particular user profile on the laptop. Or maybe I'm missing something not so obvious?

The reason this might be happening is because the Laptop is not getting 'user specific' updates from the Server and hence I suggested resetting the password and running gpupdate.
Also have you tried logging using the same ID on a different Comp?
Re: WinXP Remote Desktop Connection Crashes
After spending about an hour trying to find a fix for this problem (I've tried many suggestions found from Googling including Koolsid suggestion) but had no luck, I had to do it the time consuming way: backing up all his data (emails, favorites, desktop settings...), then remove his user account, then delete his user profile, then re add his account. Logging back in as him and RDP is working as happily as it can ever be. After verifying that RDP works, I restore his data back. The whole process took about 3 hours.
I'll mark this thread as resolved.
