[SERIOUS] Do you know the customes or tax charge ?
My uncle will be visiting US next month. I asked him to buy a laptop (DELL) from there.
But how much will the officers in airport, charge for this commodity, when my uncle returns to his home country (I mean India) ?
Any ideas.. ?
( I don't have any travel experience abroad ) :D
Re: [SERIOUS] Do you know the customes or tax charge ?
Get him to declare it as personal luggage (unless he is carrying more than one laptop). Or just not declare it. Ask around with friends who return from international travel about any electronic goods that they bring back.

Thanks for the idea...
I will try to find one (among my friends) who had traveled abroad.
Does those personal luggage won't be be considered for the duties ?
Re: [SERIOUS] Do you know the customes or tax charge ?
No. Just carry it in as a personal hand baggage and everything will be alright... i.e if he is not carrying more than one...

Doesn't Dell ship to India? Just order one online through them and they'll send it to ya.

That way he will definitelly pay shipping charges and import customs. Which for example are 30% here, so it's substantial.

He can carry upto two laptops. Claim one is his work laptop and the other as personal. The officials at the customs department don't care.

Laptops are an exception, but the Government of India typically charges about 100 - 150% customs duty on a lot of products.

And I thought our 30% was insane. What is insane though is that they charge it on shipping too. If you pay $100 for a product and $30 for shipping, that will actually tax you 30% on the entire $130.

Yeah.. Importing a car is a good example (I think). ie. for importing a brand new car from another country, we need to pay about 150% of it's price as tax...

Yeah... But there are only limited versions of Laptops available in India. For example, the Inspiron 17 (17 inch) of DELL, is not available in India !
And some of them have higher cost for Indian versions (ie. for other models) !

While chatting with the sales representative of DELL (US), they said, inside US the shipping charge will be about 15$ to 20$. Also, they will be shipped within 2 weeks and they don't ship to a Hotel address !
And for obtaining International warranty, we have to buy a 3-year Warranty pack which costs about 119$ or something. Then only, the warranty will be available for us in India.
Otherwise, the 1-year warranty (default) will be of no use, in India. :(

I had checked it on their website and didn't find one. :)
Inspiron 15 (core i3) in India itself has a starting price of Rs. 44k (from website)
And in US, Inspiron 17 costs only about Rs. 36k, with the following personalization:
Inspiron 17 + Optical Mouse + Carry Bag + 3year warranty = Rs. 36k :afrog:
Re: [SERIOUS] Do you know the customes or tax charge ?
Did you call the numbers that I gave you?
Re: [SERIOUS] Do you know the customes or tax charge ?
No. I don't have a landline here. And my mobile is having a low balance (BSNL - Students Plan).
So, I will call them when my dad comes home. (using his mobile ;))
