I tried the RC. Looks and works great. .Net Frameword 4 look promissing. Especially nice is the distribution size which is down to around 35MB for 32bit version compared to >250MB for v3.5
Hey,
Yeah, I played with the RC as well. Interesting to see what, if anything, has changed the final release.
The reduced Framework size is definitely a boost.
Gary
I had only installed it last week. Got busy with work's production issue. Probably able to do more with it tonight when I get home. Loaded it on my Windows 7 system as my work laptop is slower then molasses and they wouldnt like it if I installed it on there lol.
I just got a shiny new workstation at work, so it will be taking pride of place on there :)
Did anyone watch the live broadcast on Channel 9?
I'll probably wait until the download flood tapers off... sometime this weekend...

Just kick it off before you go to bed and then it should be done in the moring
I can't dl 2010, the connection keeps timing out...
Maybe tomorrow or Wednesday I'll dl it
I missed it too because of a stupid production issue I have to help another developer with. :(
They need to test better before deployment and stop writting bugs. I have no time to watch broadcast or post lol
Im sure it was recorded so they may make it available to watch again after some editing though lol
Seen that already. Its old but a catchy tune :)
For those too lazy to look for it lol

What is the final release? Is Visual Studios 2010 going available for download as well as purchased from the shops?
The final release, the version that we are currently downloading, is the version that you will be able to purchase from shops. Microsoft are moving to the economically friendly ways of distributing their media though, i.e. via downloads, so I wouldn't be surprised to see more of a push to buying online.

Do you have an MSDN Subscription? If so, you can get it from MSDN library.
If not, have a look here:

Gary
Hey,
In which case, if you have a look at the bottom of that blog post, you will see the options that you have.
Gary
You can always download and install the Express versions for free.
According to Microsoft site the professional edition of VS 2010 is:
upto nearly $12,000 for Ultimate?Quote:
with MSDN Essentials from $549
with MSDN from $1,199
Although, I am confused as to what is the difference between MSDN Essentials and MSDN? In that case I can afford the professional version but I think the ultimate version will have wait for a couple of years.
Hey,
The different MSDN Subscription versions entitle you to download different things from the MSDN catalog. What those exact differences are though, I am not sure. I have an MSDN Premium Subscription, and for instance, I don't have access to the Ultimate Version of VS 2010, or the Test Edition, but I can grab the Premium edition.
Gary
Woot, I have just finished preping my pc and have a new coding VM ready, gonna download it now!
Ok my version of MSDN gives me options for all the VS's, which should I go for?
I downloaded Ultimate last night (I do a lot of DB work), previous version I always took database editions.
Even Ultimate? If so, I am very jealous!!
Personally, I would install the highest version, just because I could!!

Eh just went for ultimate in the end!
Just watching this now. At the part when they work in C++ on the Picture Viewer application, it's funny how they are reffering to the old toolbars as "dated" and "legacy" (in comparrison to the ribbon), but at the same time the VS2010 they are working in is using toolbars :D
Lol @ gep,
Just installing now...
I was just checking the comparison chart for the different versions, and there are some big things in Ultimate that would have been nice to have, namely:
- Intellisense
- Architecture Diagram
- Sequence Diagram
etc
Gary
On a similar note, do you install into a VM or do you install on your main PC?
Hey,
In my case, I am going to do both.
I am going to install on my main machine, just so I have it at hand, but I am going to also install it on my VM that I do active development on. That is where I will be putting it through it's paces, and will be trying things out. As I start being happy with it on the VM, I will be adding items on my main machine as well.
Gary
Cool, as I only have one pc I found it best to develop full time in a VM which is much better than clogging up the one pc.
