Yeah, I wouldn't think anyone here would upload an *.xls file that is more than 500kb or they just upload it in a zip/rar file. Although, if I'm not mistaken you can upload the *.xls to Google and copy the upload link into a new post for members to access.
If you need to upload an attachment that is not supported, its easiest to just zip the file and attach away. People running older versions of Office apps dont benefit from the protection the newer versions have from VBA macro code attacks etc. Plus there is the fact that some people will ignore the warnings and run unknown code.
But rob, even a .doc can run macros....
Yes that is true but just trying to say that perhaps we should remove the office app file extensions altogether. The attachment limit is very small anyways so not much good on some medium sized spreadsheets or documents. We dont allow access database extensions either or visio, infopath, project etc. If we do one with a good size limit then we should do them all or do none. I'd rather see zip but its what the masses desire with the approval of the admins.
Plus dont forget that we would need to support pre-2007 and post 2007 file extensions. So it can get messy real quick on the attachment form.
In regards to Office files, due to the macro support, I think the only "Office" file format that should be allowed is rtf files (which isn't even an Office specific file format).
