Re: I Watched Avatar Today
Because James Cameron's genius knows no bounds.
Apparently his budget knows no bounds either, since studios are willing to give him boatloads of money (see: Titanic) for his "vision" to come to life.
His movies are big on special effects, which is what he is generally known for. Avatar, from what I hear, is more of that.
He's like Michael Bay, except that Cameron's movies are generally, you know, good.
Re: I Watched Avatar Today
Speaking of Bay... I see that he's at the helm of the Nightmare reboot. Wonder if they plan to deal with Freddy Kruger by blowing him up. Can't imagine a Bay film with out at least one 'splosion.

Re: I Watched Avatar Today
Rob Zombie. Now there's a director.
Personally I didn't get Avatar at all. It just seemed like every cheap cinematic trick being rolled out on a conveyor belt of derivative mediocrity. Ooh look, they've slowed down a war scene and played some poignant music. Ooh look, he's giving a "Brave Heart" style speech. Ooh look, it's a film about aliens and humans where it turns out the humans are the bad guys. Who'd a' thunk it?
The one thing I thought they did really well was the 3d and that's because they kept it understated. Nobody pointed a spear at me out of the screen, threw a rock at me or waved a feather duster. I was able to tune out the 3d and just get on with watching the film so it just added an extra something in the background. Ironically that probably means it probably could have been filmed in 2d with no great loss but I did think the 3d added a certain something without becoming the sole point of the film.
Re: I Watched Avatar Today
I'm going to the movies and i'm wondering what is better. Should i watch the movie in 3D or in 2D?

Avatar in 3D is quite a bit better than 2D.

Re: I Watched Avatar Today
Wow. I haven't seen this movie yet. With all the hype and good reviews from my friend I thought I would go see it. But from your comments, seems like it is all hype?
Re: I Watched Avatar Today
It's a mix... plot-wise... it's your standard canned plot "humans evil" kind of thing... the wow factor is in the technology.... so if you want to see it for the wow... it's probably OK (disclaimer, I haven't seen it yet) but if you're actually looking for a decent plot to follow then skip it (which is why I haven't seen it.)

Re: I Watched Avatar Today
Go see it. Regardless of whether you like it or not, it's a cultural phenomenon, and as such, is worth the few bucks admission.
Besides, the biology is worth it. As far as I'm concerned, they could just do a documentary on that...but of course, it would look like any other under water documentary. I hadn't realized that Cameron had been doing a bunch of under water documentaries prior to this movie, but that certainly explains why the the life forms tended to be similar to oceanic organisms.
Re: I Watched Avatar Today
He's been doing underwater filming for decades... not just before Avatar.... it's one of the reasons things like Titanic and The Abyss happened. I will give him this... he knows how to shoot his under water scenes very well.

Re: I Watched Avatar Today
It's funny that his films have managed to stay so well afloat.

He pretty much realized early on, there's money to be made in underwater filming. Once that sunk in, it was smooth sailing all the way.

Re: I Watched Avatar Today
Hi All,
I also have seen this movie and I have enjoyed this movie. I have seen in 2D. in this movie they have used too much Hi-technology.
Re: I Watched Avatar Today
The plot has been done about a million times before, but if wanting a no brainer action movie then dial in, excellent CGI and 3D in use.
And we have Avatar II

Re: I Watched Avatar Today
I enjoyed it. The key is having low expectations. I'm just watching John Landis's American Werewolf in London which I loved as a nipper and still love now. They don't make 'em like that any more, shame.
