Not quite, but very close... whether or not you have the email sent to you, you can see a list of threads with new replies in your UserCP.
how is that better than the notice in the user cp? I'm just curious how a PM would be better. If I had that going on, there would be days where my screen would fill up with PM notices and thread notifications... :P

I would see it in the top right when I log on, I don't go to my cp at all and I don't check email before checking the forum.
If it was an option then when someone who subscribes could turn it on, just for that one subscription which'd be perfect in my case. In your case you wouldn't use it (the default can be off).
Ah. Makes sense. I solved the problem by making my VBF link go straight into my CP. To each their own.
Another alternative would be to add a "subscriptions" line underneath the PM notice at the top right. At least then, if I'm off spellunking through a forum, and there's a reply to a thread, I'll find it soon.
I suspect all of these changes though would have to be vBulletin it self, and not something that could be easily implemented outside of the norm.

Sending pm notification wouldnt work very well as many forums set the pm limit lower then here, like 25-50. Still with an active poster it would fill up very fast. Then there is a subscription record writtien to the table as well as a pm record. Twice the storage cost.
Any change would definately require change to the source code which we are very adamant about doing as it makes upgrades harder.
vB 4.0 is already out as Gold with their first patch level 1 so maybe within a year or so we "may" see it at the soonest as its a major rewritting.
So... what you're saying is that we'll see v4.0 about the time v5.1 goes public? ;) (yes, I'm being cynical - it's part of my charm.)

Yes, correct. We always try to stay no more then 1 version behind when upgrading as new versions ALWAYS have issues and patch releases. This creates so much work for Joe to have to go around and patch critical security issues on upgraded current version forum sites so we stay back a version or so.
Maybe we will see 4.0 when it goes 4.1. Minor releases is what we are talking about here but remember we have ~30 forum sites to upgrade so the process is never ending. We just got upgraded not long ago so when its our turn to get upgraded we should be about 1 minor revision back from whatever is current at that time.
Cynical is charming? Doesnt do a thing for me though. I like women  :D
I have a link to my subscriptions, but it would be nice if there were some indication on the page that there was activity, like just changing the background of the
Welcome dbasnett box.
There was a utility written by a forum member to provide systray notification of a new reply to a subscribed thread. I just remembered. :)
If you are always on VBF then it wouldnt help a whole lot but if you dont have your browser open to VBF then a systray app would be my choice.
Rob,
Where is this application? I seem to remember seeing it once, but can't for the live of me remember where.

Found it :)

That's the one!!
Thanks :D
So how about a message below the "Private Messages" line in the top right where it'll say "A subscribed thread has a Post" and it can be a link to your subscriptions in your CP. That way if I see that message I can click on it to see them in my cp, otherwise the message doesn't appear there. Would that take too much template tweaking? It wouldn't require a DB change, just another query.
Just go to quick links when you first visit, and select subscribed threads from the drop-down. That'll take you right to the relevant screen directly.
if I'm reading Juggalo's request right, it's not getting there that is the problem... it's the knowing WHEN to go there...

Thats when using an rss feeder like the utility link I posted would come in handy.
Which I use at home, but can't at either job or the public computer's in the labs I'm frequently at, which is why it'd be kind of nice if the forum had a thing in the top right to indicate a subscribed thread has had a post. The forum's already showing things up there like received a new PM, visitor message, friend request, everything under the sun here except subscribed threads.
My link to vbf at home is set to my own cp, but that cant be the case everywhere else I check this forum.
Hey,
I think that JuggaloBrotha has a valid point, but at the end of the day, it all comes down to how difficult something like this is to add to the forum, and whether it would provide more work for the admins to keep up with.
