So The Dow Seems Happy at Over 9,000
Rather interesting. We have made it to a 9,000 Dow for a couple of days. Note that we first reached a 9,000 Dow in 1998, about 11 years ago and when Bill Clinton was president and his impeachment was in progress.
Is the Dow responding to the recent success of the New York Yankees? If not, what is it responding to? Any Ideas? :afrog:

There was a butterfly that flapped its wings and I think that was the whole reason that the Dow was affected.

I'm just waiting for that stupid anime pic to show up. Any minute now...

I'm not sure what you are chit chatting about. Do you remember Ken Lay, Jeff Skilling, and Andy Fastow--three gents who ripped off the nation for billions of dollars before the collapse of Enron? All of their illicit activities were in full force while the DJIA was climbing to 9,000 in 1998.
Just a reminder. :ehh:

Is it possible that Kregg's Pic is 11 years out of date?

Re: So The Dow Seems Happy at Over 9,000
That feels better.
Several companies are performing quite well (Barclays, Amazon) and the Dow Jones isn't doing so bad, but it speaks volumes when these things can happen and the stock market will still react negatively because, as in the most recent case, the billions of dollars of profits that they made weren't as much as they had hoped for. :ehh:

Broker called me up today and pressured me to buy more BAC. I said, "Sure was good party I went to last Saturday evening. I also like to work with copper pipe in my shop. When BAC was sitting on $3.50, how come you never pressured me to buy more shares then?"

Re: So The Dow Seems Happy at Over 9,000
The market is irrational.
One could assume that this means that the economy is recovering. One would be a bit optimistic. I agree with EntityX. A butterfly flapped its wings.
The market can move rapidly downwards as a result of mass hysteria. The other motions of the market are the sum total of greed filtered through perception.

I agree... which is why I laughed this morning when I heard that some organizations had reported that "the recession is over." HA! Oddly enough, it was the start of a good day.

I forgot to mention that there was a dandelion that had its seeds distributed by the wind and that might have also figured into what happened with the Dow. Don't forget those butterflies and dandelions.

Wasn't this part of the "chaos theory" used in Jurassic Park by Ian Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum? I think his would be more predictable...

You do realize that scientific concepts can exist before being used in movies, yes yes ya?

That's the kind of attitude we need though to help get us out of this. Every time the media says how bad things are, things get a little worse.
-
Re: So The Dow Seems Happy at Over 9,000
Interesting thought. What if the media falsely reported in such a way that they always said that things were much better than they were. Would it actually help to make things better because people had a more positive attitude. The problem with this is that if the media was falsely reporting people would become aware of this sooner or later so then they wouldn't put any value in the reports.

Re: So The Dow Seems Happy at Over 9,000
"they wouldn't put any value in the reports." that would insinuate that people currently do... for the most part, I don't. I take the news with a full shaker of salt... there are few media outlets whose news I take as the absolute truth.... Comedy Central being the primary one.

Obama's speeches don't help either. Everytime he speaks, he says we still have a long time to go and it will be tough. Immediately afterwards, stocks plummet.

Sometimes the only reason politicians open their mouths is to change feet. :afrog:
