[RESOLVED] Fresher to Linux

Hello,

I am interested to know and develop using Linux. I have 0 (zero) experience in Linux. Please let me know about it from the very beginning including installation, tutorials (online) and others which are needed for the development purpose.

Please suggest how do I install Linux on my machine where already Windows XP has installed. Also point out where from I download the OS.

Please tell me whether it is possible to run the Linux with the following configuration.

Processor: Celeron
HDD: 40 GB
RAM: 512 MB

Well, if you don't want to wipe your current system you can install it on a virtual machine either VirtualPC or VMWare are good. You can also run Linux straight off the cd/dvd although you will need to install it at some stage.

http://www.linux.org is the main site of the Linux groups although, there are main different variations of the operating system.

Thanks a lot Nightwalker83. Do you feel my PC configuration is alright ? I wish to install Linux by replacing Windows XP. Also I wish to make it LAMP. So that I will get a development environment where I can run the programs using C, C++, PHP, Java etc.

Please suggest where from I download and tell me which flavor should I choose. Also help me by giving guidelines on installation, configurations and others. Please help.

The only thing I can suggest at the moment is you might want to get more RAM.

I completely disagree with the "get more ram" comment. Linux is nowhere near as ram hungry as, say, Vista.

For about 2 years, I was running Fedora Core 4 Linux on a Pentium 1 200mhz box with 64 megs of ram and a 4GB hard disk. I used it as a web and database server. It was fine. Not terribly fast, but it never had any problems at all.

Can you please tell me as a fresher how do I start with the Linux ? Which flavor of Linux suits me as a fresher ? I wish to use it as a full time development platform. I wish to run PHP, .NET, Java and other framework on it. Please suggest and help me out of the puzzle.

Zegenie studios offer a distribution chooser. It asks a bunch of questions to determine which distributions (of a limited set) are most suitable. It's kind of limited but fairly useful if you are completely in the dark.

Any distribution you look at will most likely state the minimum/recommended hardware requirements for a particular release.

Thanks for the url. I use it and it provides the OpenSuSE at the top of the choices. I am going to download it and install it on my machine.

Let me know something about OpenSuSE, if possible. If you have some good guide on Linux and/or OpenSuSE (online[preferable]/offline), then please refer it to me.
