Linux for Children (amended title) - - - +Spellage
I've an old laptop I want to resurrect for a child (6). I remember looking at the Puppy distro a few years ago and it being very easy to install and use. It seems to have come on some since. Has anyone got recent experience of it? Is it still small quick and simple? What are the chances of me getting some older (win95/98) games working with Wine. The games are all fairly basic low spec 'learning to read with Winnie the Pooh' type stuff.
Re: Linux for Children (amended title)
I spoke to a friend who seemed to suggest that Wine will struggle with any DirectX as support is minimal. This might well be moot as he also mentioned KDE-ED which led me to this article specifically aimed at Linux for children. Looks like I have a lot to play with, I'll give it a pop over the next few weeks and report back.
Would still like to hear about peoples Puppy experience.
Re: Linux for Children (amended title)
unless the game is full screen, it may not even be directx. And there are some free linux children games available. i noticed them in the games section of the ubuntu install manager

The windows games in question all use DirectX but I think I'm now not so bothered about getting them working anymore. I've found a lot more native software than I was expecting. Whether I can get it working I don't know.
I'm pretty much a new to this, been playing with text editors and command line compilers in prep (in windows). I'm hoping to make a start over the next few weeks.

It sounds like you are looking for Edubuntu. It's a linux distro designed for kids with lots of educational programs and games aimed towards that age group.
Re: Linux for Children (amended title)
Cheers for that, I've been surprised at the amount of material out there.
I'll check it out, Unbuntu and Edubuntu
I did not get on with Puppy.
I've found a liking for Fedora, I want to try gCompris with it (which i see is also part of EduBuntu).
