[RESOLVED] 70-536 Certification

Been sparsely using vb.net for a year, and I decided to buy the Training Kit 70-536 to take the exam this month to avail of the Second Shot promo, although I'm only into the book halfway. Got questions though, that might motivate me to really take the exam before June 30, please.

1. Can anyone of you humbly admit that you took this exam 2 or more times to pass?
2. Will my exposure to .NET allow me to pass, with the help of this book and perhaps MSDN, given a short period of time to review?

You really shouldn't be advocating the use of braindumps, they are illegal, and totally negate the examination process, and negates the validity of the certifications that you achieve!!!

I can tell you that I passed this exam on the first attempt. I had some exposure to .NET prior to taking the exam, but I can tell you that if you know the contents of the Microsoft Press book for 70-536, and you do the practice exams that come with it, then you should stand a very good chance of passing the exam. And like you say, you have the benefit of the second choice to take advantage of.

Definitely stay clear of the brain dumps!!

i wouldnt go as far to say they are illegal, if that was the case then the site would have been shut down about 10yrs ago.

I would go as far as call them illegal!!!

Do a google search for "brain dump illegal" and you will see what I mean. before entering the examination, you have to sign an agreement that you won't remove any questions for the examination, and these brain dumps are as an exact result of doing just this, and microsoft are working on shutting them down.

You shouldn't rely on these for helping you pass the exam, instead, you should actually learn the material.

I resent the comment that you made regarding the majority of people using these sites, I for one definitely don't!!!!

Leaving aside the debate over whether such things are ethical or legal: Paying for test solutions might help you get a certification, which in turn might or might not help you get a job, but it certainly won't help you do the job you'd be hired to do in that event...

Perhaps anyone who is thinking of wasting money on test questions should consider actually studying the material instead...

im only going on what was asked in the original post. they have the training kit which is about 1000 odd pages, and halfway through it. but they wanna know if they will be able to get through the exam, hence why i said have a look at braindumps (or testking) that'll give you an idea on the questions. if they can answer them then they should be able to get through the exam if they cant then there is no point attempting the exam

i didnt say cheat, they can be used to get an idea on the typical type of questions you'll be asked.

end of the day its a bit of paper to say you can answer multiple choice questions on a particular MS technology - they aint worth jack imo just a money making scheme for MS hence why they are not really that interested in shutting down sites the likes of braindumps etc

im an MCAD and done plenty of MCP's but they are about as much use as a chocolate teapot in real world projects, that only comes with experience and most employers know this

I'm just trying my best to read the book a second time now, but it seems impossible to memorize the concepts when you don't apply them in the real world, esp. the security section.

I guess most of you passed this exam on your first try, hence no response to my first question. Good on you...

Have you tried the sample questions that came with it? How did you get on with them?

70-536 includes a lot of information that you probably won't use again, as it tries to cover a lot of the .Net Framework. Which area are you looking to specialise in, Web or Windows?

In the new set of exams, there isn't going to be anyway pre-requisite exam (i.e. 70-536) but rather the core information needed will be included in the main exam, you can find more information about that here:

@Gambit001 there is a bit more to the certifications than that. In my company for instance, it helped us to achieve Microsoft Gold Certified Partner Status, so in my opinion, they are very much worth it.

@janilane - plenty of people fail them first time around, ive failed on vb6 ones back in the day and have seen plenty of others in previous companies ive worked in fail various exams.

@gep13 - granted they do help the company get perks from MS but what im saying is that there isnt much use to them as an employee except to say you have them

gep13, yes you have the book right.
The sample codes are okay, the sample questions are quite tricky and confusing (needs memorization i guess), and the scenarios are quite difficult to answer.

In my experience, I found that the sample exams that came with the book were actually set slightly higher than the actual exam. I did to practice exams before sitting the actual exam and I failed the both, but I was able to pass the actual one. You certainly shouldn't be trying to memorize the questions, that is definitely not the right approach, rather, attempt to understand the principles behind them. Are you actively working on a .Net Project at the minute? I found that having an actual project to relate some of the samples to helped a great deal.

What I meant was this.....

70-536 is used as the pre-requisite exam for both the .Net Framework 2.0 series of MCTS and MCPD, as well as the .Net 3.5 series of exams. This means that before you can achieve and MCTS, you have to sit 70-536, regardless of which route you take, web or windows.

This is changing for .Net 4.0. There is not going to be a pre-requisite exam anymore, but rather the relevant information for the particular route you are studying will be included in the MCTS exam. I hope that makes sense.

All I am trying to say is make sure you are studying the route that is most applicable. My company actively uses .Net 2.0, that is why I went down that route, and my intention is to upgrade to 3.5 as we start using it.

Thanks Gary. :), not i'm not into projects at the moment. I'm just trying out all examples by themselves, and the problem is trying to remember all those classes or returned types from some namespaces.

All I can say is that give it some time, it will slowly start to make sense, stick with it.

If you can, I would definitely recommend starting some kind of project, some simple, that you can start applying the principles that you are learning to, this will really help you!!
