Take out your bad habits one at a time and then someday you can eliminate the bad habit of feeling that you have to have food and air and any other so called material necessity to live and if you succeed at all of that then you'll be truly free and not before. I'll say that I'm not there and have much work to do.
I suppose I have unintentionally tried that quite a lot. When playing games, I convince myself that skipping a meal won't do me any harm as long as long as my mind is off food and on the game. Of course at some point, a day or two later, I become really weak, proving that "Iz doin it wrong". Plus there's the whole material aspect of gaming too.
I do often wish that I didn't need food to survive because it's such a waste of time away from coding and gaming and posting on VBF... but if you really, really think about it - if nobody needed food, then our race would cease to be. There would be no reason to work, no reason to go anywhere or even move (like Alabama, but larger). The things we do nowadays all center around the fact that we do need food and our actions are derivatives of that. It's in the R-Complex of the brain, I saw it there with a brainoscope. That is counter-intuitive to our purpose as a species but only if you believe in some form of evolution or intelligent design.
These desires like for food, air, sex, possessions and other things keep the machinery of this world going but sometimes a soul wants to be free of it all and they can get free if they never give up but it takes quite a while to become comepletely free as I stated above. Literally thousands of human incarnations. A Christ, a Krishna or a Yogananda doesn't need food or any other material thing to live but if you're not there then you have to be practical but you can gradually move toward the state that they attained. Try to practice a little more self control with regard to food, sex and everything else and someday you can realize your complete freedom. Inner Joy that doens't need any external at all. Do you want your happiness to be forever dependent on externals. I don't. If people say I'm dreaming then I'll anwswer yes I am but I say I can realize the dream if I never give up.
There are homeless people that might feel like getting a good job is an impossibility but there are of course plenty of people that have good jobs. There are beings above us that have realized things that many of us would consider impossible. Christ said, "nothing is impossible to him who believes." The miracles that are written about in the bible I believed really happened and Christ said that we can do what he can also. It takes patience and determination and faith. There are problems in programming that you can solve that others can't and there are problems of other sorts that you may feel you can't solve but there are others that have solved those problems.
