what i want is a NAS for backup's basically. it doesn't have to be fast.
what i have found so far is
Linksys NAS200
D-Link DNS-321
with both of them it looks like i can get 1TB, raid 1, for about $500. any other suggestions? tia!

Check out this Buffalo TeraStation NAS. It supports RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10. Gigabit connection. 2TB for less than $300:

I would have to back stanav up on that one. We have used one of those at work, and they are very easy to use and configure.

Yeah we use a buffalo NAS drive at work and whilst its not great in a domain environment, it would be fine for the scenario you described.
i ended up buying a D-Link DNS-321 with Seagate 1TB drives(Raid 1) for $364.
it installed on both pc's easily and i even upgraded the firmware over the wireless network (before i came across the warning not to do that).
backed up both pc's by drag and drop. it took an hour for 13GB over the wireless.
i finished my automated backup application today (????).
