If that article is strictly accurate (it reads like it's been heavily spun to me) then I don't see that the right to choice lobby need to explain it away at all. The right to choice lobby are arguing in favour of abortion, not of murder. If this baby really was born alive and then killed it falls quite clearly under the latter category just as neglecting failing to feed a toddler would (and has). I think you'd be hard pressed to find any members of the right to choice lobby who thought otherwise and those that do would be branded as nutters by the rest.
Wouldn't 23 weeks be considered illegal anyway? That seems way to late to have an abortion.
In the UK, late term abortion is legal up to 24 weeks so, while 23 is very late, it's still within the bounds of legallity (in the UK, I'm unsure of US law) and a grey area as far as morality is concerned. I'm inclined to say the mother should have sought this procedure waaaay earlier or not at all but I have no idea as to her circumstances so I'm not in a position to judge her.
My problem with "Thomas'" post, though, is not that he's arguing against late term abortion. My problem is that he's arguing that the pro choicers should have to explain away an act which they don't actually advocate (the termination of a baby after birth) and, I assume, trying to imply that it's somehow their fault and they're all a bunch of baby murdering psychopaths. That's like me saying "World War 2 was, like, really bad and people died and stuff. Hey America, you've had a right wing government for the last decade. Let's see you explain away the holocaust. Huh, Huh!". There's just no reasoned connection there.
Yeah, I know what you were getting at. The silly stabs whether from the right or left on any issue get annoying. I know we all do it at times, but when the same person does it over and over.... well you get the point. But he did cause a few people to see an opportunity to revive this forum, so he you have to give him indirect credit for that.Quote:

Anyways, my post wasn't directed at aiding his argument or anything, I was just pointing out that I didn't realize you could do abortions that late. Actually, I always thought they stopped at 3 months. I did look up one clinic around this area and sure enough they terminate up to 22 weeks. I think that's a little late, but whatever.
One thing I do wonder about is why this woman is suing the doctor. After all, didn't she get the desired result? Would she have kept it if they didn't dispose of it?
Actually I'm quite glad he has brought some life back to World Events, someone sure needed to. That won't stop me arguing against him when I disagree, though. That's what WE is for after all.Quote:

I have to agree that 23 weeks seems very late to me too but its worth bearing in mind that sometimes people don't even realise they're pregnant up to that time. They may be unable to get the support they need to make the decision early. Family and peer pressure may stop them having the procedure early. Basically there's a bunch of good reasons why an abortion may be required late. Without knowing this woman's circumstances I wouldn't be confident saying she shouldn't have sought the procedure but I'd hope there was a good reason. It's impossible to tell from that article, though.
Because she's American, it's what you guys do. (Sorry, I couldn't resist it)Quote:

In Florida it is unrestricted until the last trimester which is 28 weeks onwards.Quote:

Wow! There seem to be a lot of people with x-ray version around. :sarcastic: protection anyone? That seems like the logical choice when having sex and no making a mess of your life.
isn't this one of those things that should never have been legislated? why can't this be between me and my higher power? we are so busy telling others what to do, instead of setting an example to follow.
i don't like abortion so i "got fixed" so i will never be a party to one.
Abortion is a natural step in the empowerment of humans to consciously make decisions on their futures.
