[RESOLVED] Network configuration issues
So here's my setup. Really irritating ISP that won't let you do anything you haven't paid them to do. The modem is currently plugged in to the primary PC through USB, and won't send a proper signal over ethernet to a router, so I'm stuck running the modem to the PC. Previously, the PC was running ethernet out to a laptop, and that worked. However, I want to change that to run to a wireless router so we can connect more computers. But, it's being dumb. I've never had to use this setup before, so I don't know if there's anything fancy that needs to be configured in Windows (all computers are running XP). Any thoughts or suggestions?
Re: Network configuration issues
you should be able to use the modem with a router no problem. stage one though is getting it to work with an ethernet port by itself. Some routers let you pick the reported mac address. Once you have gotten the modem to work with the ethernet port, there is no issue at all sticking a router in the middle since the modem won't know its there if you mirror the mac of the pc.
Re: Network configuration issues
I called tech support and found out from them that the modem locks in the mac address of whatever it's connected to when it powers up. Everything has to be fully powered down, then the setup can be changed, power it back up and it'll pick it up properly. Further proof of their incompetence as an ISP, but the network works fine now.

my ISP has actually got a television ad telling you "if your internet isn't working, power down then power up". I guess they find it cheaper than the tech support.
