anyone use free internet access though NTL World via a normal BT phone line?
(NOT cable)
If so, what's the connection like?

Ok im gonna get killed for this...but i use AOL, every1 says you keep getting cut of and the connection is ****, but ive left it for more than 48hours with out being "kicked" or disconnected and i disconnected it myself at the end of that 48 hours, the connections i get are always above 50000 which is better than a lot of other ISPs, software is a bit crap, neva crashed on me thou, but if you have a fast enough pc you can still use IE or *cough LOUDLY "netscape navigator" *
it gets me on the internet and thats all i want...
I use NTL world through a normal BT line and its by far the best connection I have used. I get on first time 99% of the time and the speed is good.
Alex
How dare you chenko ;)
Thanks for your comments
I think I might give NTL a try because it looks like it might work out cheaper than AOL.
I used to have an AOL account about 5 years ago and it was soooo slow. I expect they've improved their servers now though!
Anyone else care to comment on ISPs before I sell my soul to NTL?
I recommend cable if you're in an area that allows it. I'm on cable with NTL, and it's £20 a month for constant access. I bought the cable modem though. If you rent one, it totals at £26 a month I believe.
512k downstream, 128k upstream. It's not as fast as they have overseas, but it's just about the best available here. ADSL is the same I think, although I have a feeling it doesn't get clogged up so easily when there are a lot of users.
Harry,
Cable modem? Know where I can get more info about this? I'm on NTL (well, ex C&Wireless), but just got a BT line installed for the purposes of ADSL. They installed it, and the little monkeys turned round and said that the line quality wasn't good enough for ADSL. I NEED an alternative...
Cable's not available where I live :(
nor is ADSL for that matter
I've just looked at the NTL site, and they say Cable Modem is not available to C&W customers yet. Does this mean i can use a C&W cable modem instead?
What a nightmare this is man....
*simon hangs his head im shame*Quote:

where abouts in the uk do you live ??¿¿
I live in the Midlands about 20 miles south of Birmingham
Hmm.. this brings me on to another gripe.
ITV advertise programs that they are showing on ITV2
Yep, you guessed it! We can't get that either.
yeah and adverts on channel 4 for new series's of things and then they say, only on E4 thatn really pisses me off !!
Well get Ondigital, then you get E4 and ITV2 (which is a waste of time - you ain't missing nothing) plus Sky One and other cool stuff like MTV.
I can get it and this is one *sleepy* village. Of course nearest cable is about 6 miles away.
Hi All Ntl Users,
Do you all get disconnected after 2 Hrs?
And has anyone wrote an app to reconnect you automatically?
If not maybe we could all get together and write an app.
We could even sell it to NON-VBWORLD users and give it for FREE to VB-World users?

I Live in Leicester (Midlands)
anyone else in Leicester visit this website?
maybe could go for a pint and a chat at the same time?
Yeah I thought about doing it Zaf but the timeout is there for a reason, if a lot of people had this app then there would be a few people on all the time and the rest of us wouldnt be able to get on.
Admitably when it cuts off after 2 hours in the middle of a download it is irritating but I guess the whole NTL world deal is pretty sweet anyway. Ive also heard that some other ISPs kicked users off for "abusing" the service.
Just my thoughts
Alex
I think you've convinced me Alex,
It's more the thought of not being able to get on as (like you said) some people may be connected 24/7.
And just out of curiosity.....
I usually connect at either 48000 or 49333 but just lately i've been connecting at 32xxx has anyone else noticed a drop in connection speed?
DocZaf
{;->
I am currently connected at 33,333 bps it does seem to vary a little but I think this is the speed of data from the modem to your computer not the true connection speed not sure through
Alex
The speed of data from the MODEM to COMPUTER can usually be found by RESTTING the modem with a modem string the two main reset codes (one or the other never both together) are:
AT&F
or
AT&Z
when connecting after using any of those strings the modem connection speed usually reports 115000
DocZaf
{;->
course all the above is for a 56k modem
How do you send those strings to the modem?
Alex
From the start button on the taskbar
START
SETTINGS
CONTROL PANEL
MODEMS
Then Once the modem properties is visible
Highlight the current modem if more than one then click on the PROPERTIES button
When the Modem Properties Window Opens
Click on the CONNECTION tab
then on the ADVANCED button
phew....
And then you will see a FRAME title EXTRA SETTINGS and it should contain a TEXTBOX, you type it in there.
