I started this thread while my XBox was busy downloading the upgrade, in the hope that it would be finished by the time I'd written this first paragraph.
I'll fill you in on the details, I currently have 1% downloaded so far with 47 minutes remaining.
No wait, now it's 33 minutes.
40 minutes.
116 minutes.
275 minutes.
8 minutes.
67 minutes.
95 minutes.
33 minutes again.
This doth not bodeth well, methinks.
It's almost as if I'm not the only person downloading it... Hmm.
I downloaded it several hours ago. Thanks to my university broadband connection downloading it didnt even take 1 minute :D
Hmm...if it took me < 1 minute, and its taking this long for you, that must mean the servers are quite busy! :D
Its a very nice update.
I gave up. I'm going to live in a cave for 3 months until my broadband becomes functional again.

I visited your website and press Ctrl+F5 twice.
I tried to have a look at some friends avatars at:

But it says server's too busy. I guess there is alooot of action going on on microsofts servers today.
I've got a 360, but I don't want to try to update it tonight because the servers are so slammed.
im just looking forward to being able to load games to the HD to get better load times, and so you don't have to hear the system choking on a DVD every 5 seconds...
Heading home now to DL.. should not be a big deal considering MS has always released fall updates on a single day, and there was never an issue with the past 2 years. (Just think about patch tuesday and how much data must be flying over windows update)
There were some reported issues over the weekend though, which was likely while they were getting production servers ready to go live.
just an FYI, took about 2 minutes from turning the console on, to being up and running with the update.

But yeah, it was a loose look-alike of myself I suppose, based on what they had to offer (looks more like me than the one on my Wii at least).

It takes some time getting used to navigating the menus on this new dashboard, but I like it.
Just updated as well and the whole process took about 2 minutes. Very nice I'm impressed :D
I bought the xbox 360 premium on release day back in 2005, so I only have a 20 gb harddrive, which wouldn't store very many games.
I like it, not that its any great feat but it feels like my Xbox has been refreshed. Athiest can you not get Movie rentals!? hate that! We have it in Ireland. Dunno about the whole avatar thing but I like the new graphics and I like the save to HDD option. I need a bigger hard drive though.

Where is the save to HDD option? Cant seem to find it.
Save to HDD is in the "Disc info" panel.
I saw this feature and my eyes lit up with happiness and joyous anticipation.
"Wow, I can install Oblivion to my HDD and have it load as fast as it does on the PC version."
Imagine my surprise then, when the single sole benefit of doing this is to play the game without the deafening roar of the DVD drive thrashing around at 17 billion RPM. Load time is not noticably improved.
Ok so that alone is probably worth the installation to HDD but at the expense of reducing my HDD's free space to something like 300mb.
Annoying thing is that EVERY time I want to play Oblivion I still need to have the game disc inserted (fair enough, its clearly an anti-piracy measure) but how about just every 10th time I play it?
Screw this I'm buying a SNES.

What HDD size have you got wossy? I heard people saying that the 120gb ones are actually faster than the smaller ones. Not sure if its true though.
My update happened in about ten minutes, and I'm pretty sure I hate the new interface. It's too clunky. Why can't the triggers just go up or down in the menu, the same way they used to switch the blades? That was easy to use. This isn't. The whole thing is typical Microsoft in that it's very pretty, but not that functional. I'm disappointed. I want my old blades back.

I dont think you can switch back to the old UI, I think they refer to the mini-blade system you get when you press the big button in the middle of the controller (whats it called? Guide button?).

yeah the new interface is better IMO so far, and for MOST common tasks, just hit the center X button on your controller, and you will find a quick launch menu. Chances are whatever you want to do is right in the quick launch.
There are still a few things lacking (why can we still not just log into our live accounts on any 360 console without having to "recover" the gamertag??) but overall its a nice change.
I have the 120GB hard drive, and load times are only slightly faster on some games, as woss said, the big benefit seems to be saving the DVD drive from certain death, and the noise factor.
That could of course be because every game up until now was designed with having DVD load speed issues worked into its optimization. Aka some games probably COULD be faster, but they are not simply because the game was designed with how load speeds from the DVD are.
I don't dislike it for the sake of disliking it. I've always preferred information over aesthetics, and the NXE is very pretty, but not that informative at any given moment. Most simulators I write have fairly extensive data readouts, I use WMP10 because it gives me more info faster than 11 does, I run everything windowed and cascaded so I can jump around very quickly between tasks. I prefer function over design, and to me, the NXE is all about design. Looks great, I can't deny that. The opening video was pretty freaking sweet. But the fact that it shows you each friend's avatars individually, when all I want is a quick list of who's online and who isn't... looks great, irritating to use. And the fact that the triggers jump straight to one of those two sections, and the bumpers navigate two blades instead of one? That's a waste. How about making the triggers navigate one at a time through the sections, and the bumpers can jump from front to back of that section. That'd be much more useful for someone like me.Quote:

My 360 hasn't been turned on in 4 months.

Atheist, I've got the 20gb HDD.
Last night I did notice a slight speed increase in Oblivion after I started the game with "A" held down (clears the game's cache before playing).
Whether it stays fast when running from the HDD remains to be seen.
One thing I thought was cute from the NXE is the way the right thumbstick makes your avatar's head look around in different directions. If you look closely and waggle the stick left-right then the avatar becomes angry, up-down makes it happy.
That is cute but it does not justify tying my xbox up for 3 frickin' hours last night while the update downloaded. Can't MS afford decent servers these days.

On closer inspection, if you peel off the "ADSL" sticker it says "US Robotics 19kbps". Is that a lot? Also it appears to resemble a small fibre-optic christmas tree with half the branches missing. Also there's this little windmill on it.
